No. 19 Women's Lacrosse rally falls short to No. 1 Pace, 13-11

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The No. 19 Assumption University women's lacrosse team's second-half surge was not enough, as the Greyhounds would fall to the reigning national champions, Pace University, in the regular season finale, Tuesday evening.

Records: Greyhounds (10-7, 7-4 NE10), Setters (17-0, 10-0 NE10)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Pace was the first team to score, as Nikki Mottes scored the opening goal at 13:40. Molly Weiand tied the game at 1-1 with her marker at 12:13. The Setters took control of the game, outscoring the Greyhounds 6-0 for the rest of the opening frame and leading 7-1 after 15 minutes. 
 
Weiand opened the second with her second of the contest before being answered by Angelia Pocello. Kyle Johnston got on the scoreboard with a pair of goals just 37 seconds apart, cutting the deficit to 8-4. Annie Sheehan put a cap on the first half, putting Pace up 9-4 entering the break. 
 
The Greyhounds continued to chip away at the deficit, as Kyle Johnston opened the second half with her third of the game at 12:50. Isabelle Edwards got Assumption within three (9-6). After another goal from Angelina Porcello, Olivia Catanzarite and Jenna Joseph went back-to-back, getting the Hounds within two (10-8). 
 
The game headed into the fourth quarter with the Setters maintaining a two-goal edge, but Sheehan would net back-to-back goals to push the hosts back up four (12-8). Catanzarite halted the run by the Setters at 7:41, but Porcello converted on an up-goal, extending the Pace advantage to 13-9. The Greyhounds would not go quietly, as Catanzarite and Kyle Johnston netted goals in the final 90 seconds but could not complete the comeback and would fall 13-11. 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Skylar Troyan logged 12 saves for the Greyhounds.
  • Kyle Johnston led the way for Assumption with three goals, while Jenna Joseph had one goal and three assists. 
  • The Setters outshot the Greyhounds 34-29, while Assumption won 17-of-28 draws. 
  • Pace leads the all-time series 9-0.
