NEW CASTLE, Del. – Jordan Dwyer's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh capped off the rally, as the No. 4 seeded Assumption University softball team defeated the No. 5 seeded Saint Anselm College Hawks 4-3 in the 2024 NCAA Division II Softball East Regional First Round at Asbury Field on the campus of Wilmington University.
THE BASICS
Score: Assumption University 4, Saint Anselm College 3
Records: Greyhounds (24-14, 17-5 NE10) | Hawks (24-23, 13-9 NE10)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Saint Anselm jumped to an early lead as Sam Wiberg hit a three-run home run, clearing the right-field fence in the top of the first inning. The Greyhounds would chip away at the deficit in the bottom of the second inning as they plated a pair of runs.
Kaitlyn Cahill scored on an
Abigail Larson suicide squeeze before
Raigan Gregoire crossed the plate on an
Alyssa Johnson single to left field.
Assumption tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, as
Lauren Geremia came around to score, as
Kaitlyn Cahill's hot shot was not handled by the Hawks' shortstop. The game would head to the bottom of the seventh, with the Greyhounds getting the first two runners to reach with a single by Larson and a hit-by-pitch by Johnson. After a sacrifice bunt by
Emma Bloom to move the runners to second and third with just one out in the frame,
Jordan Dwyer's sacrifice fly to center field was deep enough to score Larson from third and walk it off for the Greyhounds.
Kaelin Waldron came on in relief of
Anna Tassone, and she scattered four hits over 6.2 innings, including 14 of the final 15 batters she faced.
