WORCESTER, Mass. – For the first time in 18 years, the Assumption University women's volleyball team has swept a home tri-match, as the Greyhounds defeated Southern New Hampshire University 3-2 before besting Bloomfield College 3-0, Saturday afternoon inside Andrew Laska Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Match One – Assumption University 3, Southern New Hampshire University 2
Assumption started strong in the day's first match, as they raced out to a 5-1 lead. The Greyhounds would slowly extend their advantage, as it ballooned to six points (1-13) following a kill by
Carly Goodhue. Southern New Hampshire would try to cut into the deficit, but freshman
Kaitlyn Montgomery finished the first set with a kill for a 25-21 final.
The Penmen established their offensive rhythm early in the early portion of the second set, as they grabbed a 6-3 early advantage. The Hounds would battle back and take a 15-14 lead following a kill by
Alexis Distasio. The set would continue to be a back-and-forth affair until it was tied 19-19 when SNHU went on a 6-2 run, leading to a 25-21 set win.
The third set was full of runs. The Penmen began on a 4-1 sprint, which grew to an 8-4 lead by the guests. Assumption responded with nine of the following 12 points to grab a 13-11 lead. After SNHU went back in front, the Greyhounds answered back to take a 20-18 lead. The Penmen rebounded to go up 23-22, but Montgomery and Distasio combined for three straight kills to clinch a 25-23 third-set win.
The Blue and White opened up the fourth quarter on a 7-0 run, but Southern New Hampshire would not roll over as they clawed their way back and would tie the set at 19-19. The Penmen carried the momentum till the end of the fourth set, as they would force a fifth set following a 27-25 set four win.
SNHU started strong in the deciding set, racing to a 4-1 lead that grew to 6-3. After an Addie Garn kill to flip the court at 8-6, the Greyhounds fought back and would win nine of the final 13 points, with the final kill coming off the right hand of Distasio.
Match Two – Assumption University 3, Bloomfield College 0
The first set against Bloomfield began tight. The two teams traded the first few points of the contest, but with the score tied at 11-11, the Greyhounds went on a 7-2 run, which
Carly Goodhue powered, putting Assumption up 18-12. The two teams traded points for the rest of the set, leading the Hounds to a 25-20 win in the opening set.
The Bears started fast in the second set, racing to an early 6-1 advantage. The Hounds would slowly chip away at the deficit until they tied it at 17-17. The Blue and White closed out the second frame strong, as they used a 9-2 run to go up 2-0 following a 25-19 set win.
The tight match would continue into the third period, as the two teams would battle to establish any advantage.
Marisa Billone gave the Hounds the first three-point edge of the set following a service ace, making it 15-12. The Assumption lead would slowly grow down the stretch, as Goodhue led the charge with three kills, while
Lily LeDuc and
Allie Barton added kills along the way to a 25-20 Hound win to capture the three-set sweep.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Carly Goodhue led the way for the Greyhounds with 33 kills, while Kaitlyn Montgomery (20), Alexis Distasio (18), and Anna Dean (10) had double digits.
- Marissa Krawczyk paced the Assumption offense with 44 assists, while Marisa Billone had 27.
- Defensively, Barbara Illig led the way with 46 digs, while Montgomery had nine blocks.
- With the sweep today, it is the first time since September 2, 2006, that the Greyhounds have swept a home tri-match.
- Post leads the all-time series with Assumption 4-2, while the Greyhounds now lead the Lions 6-2.
