WORCESTER, Mass.— Kayla McGaffican and
Heather Ajakie scored in the shootout to capture an extra point as the Assumption University women's ice hockey team over Post University following a 1-1 tie in New England Women's Hockey Alliance action, Saturday evening.
THE BASICS:
Score: Assumption University 1, Post University 1 – SO (2-0, Assumption
Records: Greyhounds (1-4-1. 1-0-1 NEWHA), Eagles (0-5-1, 0-1-1 NEWHA)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
After a scoreless first period, where Post had the edge in shots (12-8), Caroline Lilly put Assumption in front, as she scored the opening goal at the 11:30 marker of the second period. The Greyhounds controlled the momentum in the middle stanza, as they outshot their opposition 17-9, while also winning 16-of-23 faceoffs in the period. The Eagles would not go away, as they would find the equalizer with just 2:15 showing on the clock, as Tristan Currie scored.
The game would go to overtime, with both sides having countless chances, but after five minutes of three-on-three action, the game would go to a shootout to find a winner. In the shootout,
Kayla McGaffigan and
Heather Ajakie found the back of the net, while on the other side of the ice,
Jadyn Weiser stopped both of Post's shots to secure the extra point.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Jadyn Weiser logged 35 saves in the crease for Assumption.
- Post outshot Assumption 36-35, while the Greyhounds won the faceoff battle 31-of-52.
- Neither team scored on the power play, as Assumption was 0-for-3 and Post was 0-for-4.
- Assumption now leads the all-time series 5-3-1.
