WORCESTER, Mass.—The Assumption University men's ice hockey team fell to Worcester State University 3-2 in overtime, in the opening round of the 2025 Woo Cup, Friday evening at the Worcester Ice Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Assumption came out of the gates buzzing, as they outshot Worcester State 21-3 in the opening few minutes of the contest. The Lancers flipped the script, as they outshot the Greyhounds 15-0 over the final few minutes of the first period. After a scoreless first period, the game opened up, as
Jonathan Surrette scored a short-handed goal, putting the Hounds up 1-0. WSU tied the game less than a minute later, as Brady Carpenter scored on the power play. Worcester State took their first lead of the game at 9:06 with Matt Lombardi netting an even-strength tally, but it would be
Ryan Decker who would cap off the middle frame with a power play goal, tying the game at 2-2.
The game would head to overtime, with both sides having numerous scoring chances, but neither netminder would give up anything. Matthew Nuzzolilo ended the game for the Lancers, as he scored on a wrist shot with 2:05 remaining on the 3-on-3 overtime period.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Callum Welch recorded 43 saves in the loss.
- Both sides had 46 shots on goal, but it was Assumption that won 49 of 80 faceoffs.
- The Greyhounds and Lancers both went 1-for-6 on the man-advantage, but it was the Hounds that struck while shorthanded.
- Assumption still leads the all-time series 40-34-5.
