Men's Basketball soars past Post in home opener, 91-74

WORCESTER, Mass. —The Assumption University men's basketball team saw five players score double-digit points, as the Greyhounds rolled for a 91-74 win against Post University in non-conference action, Wednesday evening inside Andrew Laska Gymnasium. 
 
THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Assumption started fast, applying the full-court press from the opening tip and racing out to a 16-7 lead 6:22 into the game, with Baril Mawo and Luke Michalski combining for ten. The Greyhounds' lead continued to grow, as the Hounds went on a 22-12 run over the following eight minutes, extending their lead to 38-21. After a quick 9-0 run by Post, Daouda Dembele and Noah Payne combined for seven points and a 7-4 run to head into halftime with a 45-34 lead. 
 
Coming out of the break, the Assumption offense continued to click, as Zee McCown and Connor O'Leary led a 16-9 run to extend the hosts' advantage to 61-43. After the two teams traded baskets for the next few minutes, a Tayeshawn Cunningham-Pemberton drilled a three-pointer, putting the Greyhounds up 20 (72-52), kick-starting a 17-3 run that would make it 86-55 with 5:37 left in regulation. The Assumption offense would go cold for the final 5:14 of the game, as Post outscored the 19-5, closing the final score margin to 17 (91-74). 

BY THE NUMBERS:
  • Noah Payne and Luke Michalski led the way for Assumption, as the duo recorded 32 points. 
  • The Greyhounds outrebounded the Eagles 39-27, while also dominating the points in the paint (42-34). 
  • Assumption turned 25 Post turnovers into 29 points, while the Eagles forced 20 turnovers into 17 points. The Greyhounds had 17 steals, led by Baril Mawo with four and three steals apiece for Myle Alcindor and Connor O'Leary
  • Assumption leads the all-time series 7-3.
