WORCESTER, Mass.—The Assumption University men's ice hockey team needed an overtime goal from
Jake DiNapoli, giving the Greyhounds a 2-1 win against Nichols College in the 2025 Woo Cup consolation game, Sunday afternoon.
THE BASICS
Score: Assumption University 2, Nichols College 1 - OT
Records: Greyhounds (1-1-0, 0-0-0 NE10) | Bison (0-2-0, 0-0-0 CNE)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
After a scoreless first period, which saw Assumption outshoot Nichols 12-11, it was the Bison who got the first goal of the contest, as Wyatt Teubert scored on the power play late in the second period. The Greyhounds would eventually get on the scoreboard, as
Ryan Decker scored the equalizer with
Brett Cunningham and
Andrew Toomey picking up helpers on the play.
The game would head to overtime, where it was
Jake DiNapoli who scored the game-winner 1:55 into the extra frame.
Jonathan Surrette found DiNapoli on a 2-on-1 breakaway with
Shane McElhaney. DiNapoli passed it over to McElhaney, who the netminder stopped, and it was the senior captain who scored the loose puck.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Michael Salvatore recorded 40 saves in his first action in a Greyhounds sweater.
- Nichols outshot Assumption 41-38, while also winning 47-of-78 faceoffs.
- The Bison were the only team to score on the power play, as they were 1-for-6, while the Hounds were scoreless on three attempts.
- All-Tournament Team included: Christian Howanitz (Worcester State), Bryce Grandbois (Worcester State), Hayden Rynard (Anna Maria), Matthew Hennessey (Anna Maria), Ryan Decker (Assumption), CJ Zezima (Nichols), while the Lance "Duke" Brady Most Valuable Player Award went to Donovan Alfama of Worcester State.
- Nichols still leads the all-time 39-32-2.
