WASHINGTON, D.C. —The Assumption University women's basketball team extended their winning streak to five games, as the Greyhounds topped the University of the District of Columbia 55-48, in non-conference action, Sunday afternoon in the nation's capital

THE BASICS:
Scores: Assumption University 55, University of the District of Columbia 48
Records: Greyhounds (8-1, 2-1 NE10) | Firebirds (3-8, 1-2 ECC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Assumption's defense showed up in the first quarter, as they would not allow a point by the University of the District of Columbia until the final 21 seconds of the first quarter, and held them to 1-of-14 shooting in the opening 10 minutes.

The scoring picked up in the second quarter, as the hosts opened the frame with a three-pointer on their first possession. But Teagan Kamm and Maeve Moriarty hit all four of their free throws, giving the Hounds an 11-5 advantage. The two teams would continue to trade buckets throughout the quarter, but a Madison Handrahan three-pointer in the final minute of the first half would give Assumption a 25-21 lead at the intermission.

In the third quarter, Emily Collins heated up for Assumption, as she scored 10 straight points for the Greyhounds in the frame. Moriarty halted the run by Collins, as she hit a pair of free throws with 3:19 showing on the clock, giving the Blue and White their first double-digit lead of the afternoon. UDC finished off the third quarter on a 4-1 and would take the turn into the fourth quarter with Assumption leading 42-35.

The Firebirds would heat up in the fourth quarter, as they would tie the game at 46-46 with 4:22, as Dahani Coleman and Nhaikyia Smith hit back-to-back three pointers. Teagan Curran regained the lead for Assumption with 2:37 to go, as Emily Collins grabbed the defensive rebound, before tossing the full-court pass to Curran with the breakaway layup. After a pair of free throws by UDC, Thai Davis put the Greyhounds back in front (50-48) with 1:16 to go with a turnaround jumper inside the paint, before the Hounds knocked down five of seven free throws in the final minute to come away with a 55-48 final score.
