WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The No. six-seed Assumption University women's lacrosse team pulls off the upset, as they held off the third-seeded University of New Haven 14-13 in the Northeast-10 Conference Quarterfinals, Saturday afternoon at Kathy Zolad Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
New Haven started fast, potting the first three goals of the game in the opening seven minutes. Assumption responded with four straight to close out the first quarter, as
Annika Pyy,
Katelynn Johnston, and
Margaret Loeber, twice, gave the Hounds a 4-3 lead after 15 minutes. In the second, the two teams traded the first four goals of the frame, but the Chargers finished the half strong, scoring the final five goals to lead 9-6.
Coming out of the intermission, Assumption made some adjustments and saw strikes from
Kyle Johnston,
Molly Weiand,
Katelynn Johnston, and Loeber, putting the Greyhounds back in front at 10-9. The hosts netted two of the final three goals of the third quarter, tying the game at 11-11.
In the fourth quarter, the two teams traded the first two goals of the frame, but
Margaret Loeber and
Chloe Scornavacca converted on free-position goals to go up 14-12 with 5:42 remaining in regulation. Gianna Caprioli got New Haven within one with 2:22 showing on the clock, but the Assumption defense would hold on for a 14-13 finals score.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Skylar Troyan recorded 11 saves in the win.
- Assumption outshot New Haven 33-31, while the Chargers corralled 17-of-31 draw controls.
- Margaret Loeber scored a career-high six goals, while Katelynn Johnston added four.
- This was the Greyhounds' first win against New Haven since March 30, 2019, and the first time in Connecticut since April 5, 2002.
- Assumption will head to the NE10 Semifinals for the fourth time in program history, and just the first time since 2019.
- New Haven still leads the all-time series 20-4.
