PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y.—The Assumption University softball team saw Kailtyn Cahill break the single-season steals record en route to a 6-3 upset win against the No. 4-seeded Bentley University, in an elimination game, in the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament, Friday afternoon.
THE BASICS
Score: No. 6 Assumption University 6, No. 4 Bentley University 3
Records: Greyhounds (20-26, 10-10 NE10), Falcons (24-19, 12-8 NE10)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Greyhounds jumped out to an early advantage, as
Raigan Gregoire,
Molly Green, and
Naomi Cohen combined to drive in four runs in the top of the third inning. Gregoire added to her RBI total the next time she was at the dish, as her infield single, plating
Jaiden Tonucci on the play.
Kaitlyn Cahill joined the RBI-frenzy in the elimination game, as her single to center drove in
Kaylee Lacomb. Cahill proceeded to steal both second and third base, breaking Barbie Barrett's record of 31 swipes in the 1997 campaign.
Bentley would not go quietly, as they plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth, but in the bottom of the seventh,
Kaelin Waldron and the Greyhounds' defense would hold on and knock off the No. 4-seeded Falcons.
Paige Cote earned the win after tossing 5.2 innings, where she struck out a career-high seven batters and didn't allow an earned run. Waldron picked up the save, as she got the final four outs and allowed one hit.
