NEW HAVEN, Conn.— The Assumption University men's basketball team used balanced scoring to push their winning-streak to three games, following a 74-68 win at Southern Connecticut State University, in Northeast 10 Conference action Tuesday evening.
THE BASICS:
Score: Assumption University 74, Southern Connecticut State University 68
Records: Greyhounds (10-5, 5-1 NE10) | Owls (7-6, 3-2 NE10)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Southern started strong, as they raced out to a 10-2 lead, 3:22 into the game. Their lead would continue to grow until Cherif Diarra converted on a three-point play, pushing the Owls' lead to 14 (24-10) with 9:33 left in the first half. Assumption responded with a 12-1 run, fueled by
Jacob Gibbons and
Zee McCown, to cut the deficit to three (25-22). Following an Elijah Woods three-pointer for the hosts, a
Baril Mawo dunk kick-started a quick 7-0 run, giving the Greyhounds their first lead of the day, 29-28. SCSU closed out the first half on a 5-3 run, just enough to head into the halftime intermission up 33-32.
The Hounds started the second half fast, as they began the frame on a 10-0 run to take their largest lead, 42-33, just 2:24 in. Southern closed the gap and would get with one (46-45) following a Christian McClease three-pointer, but Assumption extended their lead with a 6-2 run. The Owls would continue to hang around, but the Hounds would keep them at bay. With the Greyhounds up 69-64 entering the final minute of regulation, the Blue and White would hit 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to come away with a 74-68 final score.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Baril Mawo led four Greyhounds in double-digits with 11, while Daouda Dembele (10), Tayeshawn Cunningham-Pemberton (10), and Noah Payne all had ten.
- Southern Connecticut outrebounded Assumption 41-36, but it was the Greyhounds who outscored the Owls 17-15 in second-chance points.
- This was the eighth time this season that the Assumption defense forced 20+ turnovers.
- Assumption leads the all-time series 31-18, including six straight.
