WORCESTER, Mass.— The Assumption University women's ice hockey team's late rally came up short, as the Greyhounds fell to Franklin Pierce University in a shootout, Saturday evening in New England Women's Hockey Alliance action at the Worcester Ice Center.
THE BASICS:
Score: Franklin Pierce University 3, Assumption University 3 – SOL (2-1)
Records: Greyhounds (11-12-3, 11-6-3 NEWHA) | Ravens (14-8-2, 13-5-2 NEWHA)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Franklin Pierce started strong, as they scored two goals in the first period to go up 2-0 after 20 minutes. Assumption eventually got on the scoreboard in the later part of the second period, as
Ava McGaffigan scored an unassisted power play goal, cutting the deficit down to one (2-1). Just over a minute later, Bo Dean regained a two-goal advantage for the Ravens, as she sent the game to the third period, with FPU leading 3-1.
In the third,
Natalie Joiner scored early in the stanza, as she converted on the power play, with
Justina Valentini and
Kayla McGaffigan picking up the helpers on the tally. Valentini tied the game for the hosts with 3:56 left in regulation, as she lit the lamp on the skater advantage. After a scoreless overtime period, where Assumption outshot Franklin Pierce 5-2, it would be the visitors that would come away with the shootout point, with Bo Dean netting the game winner in the fourth round.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Jadyn Weiser recorded 26 saves in the loss.
- Assumption outshot Franklin Pierce 59-29, including 45-16 in the second and third periods.
- The Greyhounds won 41-of-56 faceoffs, while also going 3-for-5 on the powerplay and keeping the Ravens scoreless on three attempts.
