Men's Basketball tops Adelphi, 77-67

WORCESTER, Mass. —The Assumption University men's basketball team led wire-to-wire, as the Greyhounds picked up a key 77-67 Northeast 10 Conference victory over Adelphi University, Wednesday evening inside Andrew Laska Gymnasium.

THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Assumption was the aggressive team early on, as they jumped out to a 7-0 lead before expanding it to 13-4, seven minutes in. Adelphi battled back to get within two (15-13), before the Greyhounds stretched their advantage to 12 (31-19), as Noah Payne hit a turnaround jumper with 3:54 to go in the half. The Panthers closed the first half on a 7-0, cutting the halftime deficit down to five points (31-26). 
 
Coming out of the break, the Hounds started to race again, as they pushed their lead to 11 points (44-33) following a Jacob Gibbons free throw, five minutes in. After back-to-back baskets by Tayeshawn Cunningham-Pemberton, giving Assumption a 54-41 edge, Adelphi went on a 10-2 burst to draw within five (56-51). Following a three-pointer by Zakari McQueen triple with 5:33 left in regulation, Lenny Tangishaka fueled a 10-0 run, giving the Greyhounds a 72-59 advantage with 2:27 showing on the game clock. The visitors attempted a comeback late, but the deficit was too vast to overcome, and Assumption would walk away with a 77-67 NE10 victory. 

BY THE NUMBERS:
  • Four different Greyhounds recorded double-digit points, as Tayeshawn Cunningham-Pemberton and Daouda Dembele had 12, while Zee McCown and Lenny Tangishaka had 10. 
  • Noah Payne filled the stat sheet with six points, two rebounds, seven assists, three steals, and two blocks. 
  • The Assumption defense had seven blocks and ten steals, while holding Adelphi to a season-low 25.0 percent (6-of-24) from beyond the arc. 
  • Adelphi outrebounded Assumption 42-38, while the Greyhounds dominated the paint in points in the key (46-34), and second chance points (15-13). 
  • Adelphi leads the all-time series 14-13
