WORCESTER, Mass.– The Assumption University women's ice hockey team scored three unanswered goals to run their unbeaten streak to five games following a 3-2 win over Sacred Heart University in New England Women's Hockey Alliance action Saturday evening at the Worcester Ice Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Sacred Heart opened the scoring at 12:36 in the first period, with Bria Holm finding the back of the net on assists from Brianna Morden and Shae Carroll. Assumption generated 11 shots on goal in the opening frame, but the Pioneers' defense held strong to maintain a 1-0 advantage heading into the first intermission.
The Pioneers doubled their lead at the 9:22 mark of the second period, as Carroll scored to make it 2-0. However, the Greyhounds responded just over two minutes later when
Annie Forker netted her fourth goal of the season at 11:33, assisted by
Rachel Agerter and
Isabella DiReda. Assumption continued to apply pressure, and DiReda scored an unassisted goal at 13:48 to tie the game 2-2. The Greyhounds dominated the second-period offense, outshooting Sacred Heart 23-10.
With the game tied entering the third period, Assumption completed the comeback at 10:56 when
Caroline Lilley scored her first goal of the season off assists from
Ava McGaffigan and
Kayla McGaffigan, giving the Greyhounds their first lead of the contest, 3-2.
Sacred Heart pushed for the equalizer throughout the remainder of the third period, outshooting Assumption 21-6. The Greyhounds were forced to defend multiple penalties, but
Taylor Thompson stood tall between the pipes, stopping all 21 shots she faced in the final frame.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Taylor Thompson recorded 40 saves in her second-straight win.
- Sacred Heart had a slight 42-40 shot advantage, while Assumption won 30-of-49 faceoffs.
- Neither side scored on the power play: the Pioneers went 0-for-4, and the Greyhounds went 0-for-3.
- Sacred Heart still leads the all-time series 8-7-1.
