WORCESTER, Mass -- The Assumption University volleyball team nearly forced a decisive fifth set, but the Greyhounds fell just short against American International College, 3-1, in Northeast 10 Conference action Friday afternoon in Andrew Laska Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
American International jumped out to an early lead in the opening set, taking a 10-4 lead before extending it to 20-11. Assumption tried to battle back behind kills from
Lily Petrocelli,
Cate Wettstone, and
Kaitlyn Montgomery, but the Yellow Jackets maintained control and took the first set, 25-16.
The Greyhounds responded with a dominant second set, opening on a 6-0 run highlighted by a pair of service aces from Wettstone and a kill from Petrocelli. Assumption continued to build its advantage, stretching the lead to 15-7 before pushing the margin to 22-11.
Kendall Larkin sparked the offense with three late kills, while Petrocelli delivered the set-clinching point to secure a 25-14 win and even the match at one set apiece. The Greyhounds hit .333 in the frame while holding AIC to .094.
American International regained momentum in the third set, using an early run to establish a 14-4 advantage. Despite kills from Montgomery and Petrocelli, the Yellow Jackets continued to pull away, taking the frame 25-13 to move ahead 2-1 in the match.
In the fourth set, AIC built an early 10-3 lead before Assumption began to chip away at the deficit. Back-to-back service aces from Wettstone helped cut the margin to 14-10, while a kill from Petrocelli and an ace from
Brooke Bowbliss brought the Greyhounds within three at 16-13. Trailing 24-20, Assumption made one final push, scoring three consecutive points after a Bowbliss service ace and an AIC attack error to cut the lead to 24-23. However, the Yellow Jackets recorded the final kill to take the set 25-23 and secure the 3-1 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Petrocelli led Assumption with a team-high 13 kills, while Montgomery added 10 kills and two block assists.
- Wettstone finished with six kills, four service aces, and four total blocks, while Larkin contributed seven kills on a .350 hitting percentage.
- Bowbliss dished out 24 assists and recorded three service aces, while Makenna Glenn anchored the defense with 16 digs.
- American International now leads the all-time series 60-5.
