EAST MEADOW, N.Y.– The Assumption University women's ice hockey team had captain
Kayla McGaffigan score a pair of goals, as the Greyhounds upended Long Island University, 3-2 in New England Women's Hockey Alliance action, Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Assumption held a 10-3 advantage in shots during the opening period, but LIU struck first as Bo Dean scored at 15:28 off assists from Izzy Krause and Ashley Mandeville. The Sharks carried the 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
Kayla McGaffigan pulled the Greyhounds even just 1:28 into the second period, with
Sydney Burnevik and
Alaina Whitesell picking up the assists. McGaffigan added her second goal of the afternoon at 18:03, finishing off assists from
Isabella DiReda and
Justina Valentini to give Assumption a 2-1 lead. The Greyhounds outshot LIU 14-1 in the frame.
Valentini extended the advantage to 3-1 with a five-on-three power-play goal at 9:44 of the third period.
Caroline Lilley and Burnevik assisted on the tally, which proved to be the game-winner. LIU answered at 12:22, as Autumn Kelly scored off assists from Eliza Quackenbush and Malene Tjomsland to trim the deficit to one.
Leila Fournier helped Assumption withstand LIU's late pressure, making 17 saves in the third period. The Greyhounds killed off two penalties in the final six minutes and held on after the Sharks pulled their goaltender with 1:04 remaining, securing the 3-2 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Fournier finished with 20 saves in the win.
- Assumption held a 28-22 edge in shots and won 31 of 56 faceoffs.
- McGaffigan led the offense with two goals, Valentini contributed a goal and an assist, and Burnevik added two assists.
- The Greyhounds finished 1-for-5 on the power play and held LIU scoreless on all five of its opportunities.
- LIU still leads the all-time series 9-4-1.
