Men's Ice Hockey heads into playoffs, following 7-1 win over FPU

WORCESTER, MASS.— The Assumption University men's ice hockey team capped off the regular season with a 7-1 Senior Day win over Franklin Pierce University in Northeast 10 Conference action on Saturday night at the Worcester Ice Center. 

THE BASICS:
Score: Assumption University 6, Franklin Pierce University 3
Records: Greyhounds (20-8-2, 14-3-2 NE10) | Ravens (9-19-0, 7-12-0 NE10)

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
Assumption started fast, as Kyle LoNigro and Leo Piandes scored in the first period to go up 2-0 after 20 minutes of action. Piandes opened the second period with his second goal of the day, with Jonathan Surrette assisting on both scores. Nick Fish lit the lamp for Franklin Pierce, getting them on the board at 4:56. That was quickly answered as Hunter DeMarco scored 100 seconds later. Surrette made it 5-1 before Andrew Toomey scored on the power play, pushing it to 6-1 after two periods of action. Luke Evers added a nation's leading 11th team short-handed goal at 10:25 of the third period, putting the game away at 7-1. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Michael Salvatore recorded 28 saves for his 12th win of the season, lowering his goals against average to 1.65 and his save percentage to 0.954. 
  • Assumption outshot Franklin Pierce 49-29, while also winning 37-of-67 faceoffs. 
  • The Greyhounds went 1-for-4 on the power play, while the Ravens were scoreless on four attempts. 
  • Assumption broke their tie with St. Thomas (Minn.) with 10 short-handed tallies, with Evers scoring the short-handed goal. 
  • With his goal in the third period, Jonathan Surrette passed Paul Lamoureau (1978-79) for the most goals in a single season in program history with his 32nd
  • Surrette capped off the regular season with the most goals in college hockey since Jimmy Vesey (Harvard) had 32 in 2014-15and the most points since Zach Aston-Reese (Northeastern) and Mike Vecchione (Union) had 63 in 2016-17. 
  • Before the game, the Assumption University Athletic Department honored seven seniors: David Lawler, Kyle LoNigro, Thomas McGaffigan, Jake DiNapoli, Dean Simeone, Hunter DeMarco, and Ryan Decker
  • Assumption leads the all-time series 40-21-7
