WORCESTER, Mass.—For the third time in four seasons,
the Assumption University women's basketball team eclipsed the 20-win mark, as the Greyhounds pulled away from Pace University 62-47 in Northeast 10 Conference action, Wednesday evening inside Andrew Laska Gymnasium.
THE BASICS:
Score: Assumption University 62, Pace University 47
Records: Greyhounds (20-6, 12-6 NE10) | Setters (7-20, 3-15 NE10)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Assumption senior,
Teagan Kamm, began the scoring on Senior Night. Pace fired back with consecutive three-pointers to take a 6-2 lead halfway through the opening quarter. The Setters captured their largest lead after two more layups went in to make it 10-2. Needing an answer, the Greyhounds came up with three key baskets by
Madison Handrahan,
Teagan Curran, and
Thai Davis to get back to within two points. Pace distanced themselves with two more three pointers in the final minute of the quarter, entering the second quarter with a 16-10 lead.
In the second quarter, Curran went off. She scored a dozen points for Assumption before another Greyhound made a basket. After Curran had collected points, she picked up the assist on
Teagan Kamm's layup, which tied the game at 24. Kamm was fouled on the play and went to the free-throw line to hand the Hounds a one-point lead, 25-24. Assumption ended the half on a 7-2 run to lead 32-26.
Maeve Moriarty opened the second half with a three-pointer that sparked more momentum for the Blue and White. Assumption led by 11 after Curran made a layup shortly after. The Hounds were unleashed, and there's no catching a Greyhound that breaks off the leash. At the end of the third quarter, they were up by 21 points, 54-33.
There was no turning back. The regular season ended with a defensive fourth quarter as the Greyhounds breezed to their 20
th win of the season.
