WORCESTER, Mass.—The Assumption University men's basketball team advanced to the Northeast 10 Conference Semifinals for the first time since the 2008-09 season, as the Greyhounds defeated Adelphi University 76-63 in the NE10 First Round, Saturday afternoon inside Andrew Laska Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
In the first half, the two teams traded buckets early on, with the largest lead at four points (13-9, Adelphi) at the 12:55 marker. Assumption was the first team to create a multiple-possession lead, following a 12-0 run by the Greyhounds, where
Zee McCown led the way with nine, but the Blue and White forced three turnovers in the 3:43 span, to go up 29-18. The Panthers finished the first half strong, as they answered with a 15-3 run to head into the intermission up 33-32.
Coming out of the locker room, Assumption was on fire, as McCown and
Tayeshawn Cunningham-Pemberton combined for 13 points, giving the hosts a 48-39 lead at the 14:08 mark. The Greyhounds continued to pull away, as
Daouda Dembele,
Noah Payne, and
Baril Mawo extended the Blue and White advantage to 14 points (57-43), five minutes later. The Panthers would claw within eight (69-61) following a Matthew Price three-pointer, but it was the Hounds who knocked down their free throws down the stretch to pull away for a 76-63 final score.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Zee McCown led all scorers with 23 points, while adding three rebounds, six assists, and three steals.
- Daouda Dembele (15), Lenny Tangishaka (11), and Tayeshawn Cunningham-Pemberton (10) all recorded double-digit points.
- Adelphi had the slight edge on the glass (35-32), while it was the Greyhounds that outscored the opposition in the paint 44-42.
- The hosts stuck to their name, winning the battle of fast-break points (15-2) and forcing 21 turnovers while only committing 11 of their own.
- Assumption was a force on the defensive end, as they recorded nine blocks and 12 steals in the win, while Adelphi only logged four steals and two blocks.
- This will be the 14th time that Assumption has advanced to the NE10 Semifinals.
- Adelphi still leads the all-time series 15-14.
