Softball splits doubleheader with Saint Anselm

WORCESTER, Mass.—The Assumption University softball team split their season series against Saint Anselm College, as for the second time in five days, the Greyhounds took game one, before falling to their Northeast 10 Conference opponent in the nightcap, Thursday afternoon at Normand R. Marois '57 Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game One Score: Assumption University 9, Saint Anselm College 8 – 10 Innings
Assumption showcased their speed in game one, as they scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, which included five steals. Saint Anselm would be held hitless for the first time through the lineup, before scoring one run in the top of the fourth and would tack on five runs in the fifth to go up 6-3. The Greyhounds drew within one run, as they plated two runs in the bottom of the frame
 
The Hawks would find an insurance run in the top of the sixth, as they scored one due to a fielding error by the Hounds' defense, but Maddy Bland would strike in the bottom of the sixth with a two-RBI single to right field and would tie the game at 7-7. The game would remain tied until the 10th inning, where Saint Anselm plated one run in the top half of the frame, but after Naomi Cohen scored on a Bianca Vincequere bunt single, Bland would come up clutch once again with a game-winning single through the right side of the infield, with Kaitlyn Cahill scoring on a throwing error by the right fielder. 
 
Kaelin Waldron got the start, allowing just one earned run in 4.2 innings, striking out three. Kya Birtz came in relief to pick up the win, as she struck out six in 5.1 innings. 


Game Two Score: Saint Anselm College 7, Assumption University 4
In game two, the Hawks raced out to an early lead, as they plated three runs in the first and two more in the second to go up 5-0. Assumption closed the gap with one run in the bottom of the second and two more in the third inning, as Emma Bloom drove in a pair of runs in the third. Saint Anselm added two more runs in the fourth to go up 7-3. Bland would strike again in the sixth, as she drove in Cahill with an RBI single to left, making it 7-4. 
 
The Greyhounds would attempt a comeback in the seventh, but they could not overcome the deficit.
