WORCESTER, Mass.— The second-seeded Assumption University women's ice hockey team fell to the third-seeded Saint Anselm College 2-1 in the New England Women's Hockey Alliance Tournament Semifinals, Wednesday afternoon at the Worcester Ice Center.
THE BASICS:
Score: Saint Anselm College 2, Assumption University 1
Records: Greyhounds (19-14-3, 17-8-3 NEWHA) | Hawks (18-147-1, 16-11-1 NEWHA)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Saint Anselm was the first team to score, following a faceoff win in the offensive zone. The pass back to the point was intercepted by Brooklyn Schneiderhan, who went coast-to-coast and scored an unassisted goal at the 9:10 marker.
The game would head into the second period with the Hawks leading 1-0, and the Greyhounds would draw an interference call at the 5:53 marker.
Ava McGaffigan would find the equalizer on the power play with
Caroline Lilley and
Kayla McGaffigan at the 6:34 marker.
After grabbing the momentum following the second, the mood would shift back to the Hawks. Following a failed clearing attempt by Assumption, the top line of Saint Anselm would find Schneiderhan in the slot and potted the go-ahead tally, just 27 seconds into the third. The Hounds would have numerous scoring chances later in the frame, as they outshot the opposition 18-9 in the frame, and with the goalie pulled for the final 2:07 of regulation, the Greyhounds could not find the equalizer and would fall 2-1.
