No. 14 Men's Lacrosse comes up short in NCAA Tournament at No. 11 Molloy, 15-12

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – The Assumption University men's lacrosse team's historic season has come to a close, as the Greyhounds fell to Molloy University 15-12 in the first round of the NCAA Division II Men's Lacrosse Tournament, Sunday afternoon at RVC Sports Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Assumption was the first team to find the back of the cage, as Boomer Staunton recorded his 54th goal of the year, 34 seconds into the contest. After Molloy tied the game five minutes later, Nolan Johnson regained the lead for the Greyhounds, with Max Lowenberg picking up the helper. The Lions tied the score at 2-2 in the final minute of the first quarter.
 
Staunton opened up the second quarter with a man-up goal off the feed by Jacob Wilson, making it 3-2. The hosts took their first lead of the contest with back-to-back goals by Jake Taylor and Noah Hammon. Lowenberg knotted the game up at 4-4 with the assist by Patrik McGrath. Brian Green gave the hosts a 5-4 lead entering halftime. 
 
Molloy came out of the break strong, as they extended their lead to 7-4 after back-to-back tallies. The Greyhounds would battle back, as Staunton struck for the third time of the game, before Lowenberg brought Assumption within one with 5:36 left in the third quarter. The Lions extended their lead to three goals after two straight goals by Zach Kroog and Justin Paluis, but Ben McHugh responded with a man-up tally. Molloy would get one more score in the final minute to send the game to the fourth quarter, leading 10-7. 
 
In the fourth, the Lions netted the first goal of the frame, before Lowenberg answered with another up-goal. The hosts would pull away in the middle portion of the final quarter of regulation, as they scored three times, before Jacob Wilson ended the run with a man-up tally with 5:38 left in regulation, while also trailing 14-9. Staunton trimmed the deficit down to four goals before the Lions made it 15-10. Assumption would score two goals in the final 2:11 of regulation but would fall 15-12. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Shane Corcoran recorded 14 saves in the loss
  • Boomer Staunton led the way with five goals and six points, while Max Lowenberg had three goals and three assists. 
  • Connor Stack was dominant at the faceoff dot, winning 19-of-28. 
  • Assumption outshot Molloy 50-48, while also winning 19-of-29 faceoffs. 
  • This was the Greyhounds' first trip to the NCAA Tournament. 
  • Molloy still leads the all-time series 10-3.
