Men's Soccer runs unbeaten streak to four with 2-2 tie against Bentley

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Assumption University men's soccer team saw Cody Holbert score a pair of goals, but the Greyhounds ended up with a 2-2 tie against Bentley University in a non-conference matchup Wednesday afternoon at Normand R. Marois '57 Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Assumption generated the early pressure, putting five shots on goal over the opening 32 minutes. The Greyhounds nearly broke through in the 38th minute when Cody Holbert struck the post, but Bentley answered just over a minute later as Michael Cagno scored at 38:17 to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead heading into halftime. 

The Greyhounds continued to push for the equalizer after the break and finally broke through at 69:19. Evan Conceicao set up Holbert, who found the back of the net for his seventh goal of the season to level at 1-1. 
Just 3:38 later, Holbert struck again. The senior converted a penalty kick at 72:57 for his second goal of the afternoon and eighth of the season, putting Assumption in front, 2-1. 

Assumption carried the one-goal advantage into the final minute, but Bentley found the equalizer at 89:23 when Michael Gouvin scored off an assist from Matt McAuliffe, resulting in a 2-2 draw.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Federico Foganio recorded a season-high six saves in the contest. 
  • Assumption outshot Bentley 19-14 and also led 6-4 in corner kicks. 
  • The Falcons were whistled for offside five times, while the Greyhounds were flagged twice. 
  • Cody Holbert is now tied for the Division II lead with eight goals and has the most goals by a Hound since Kevin Hernandez had 10 during the 2021 campaign. 
  • The Falcons' starting netminder, Alessandro Bizzini, was sent off in the 12th minute after receiving a straight red card. 
  • Bentley still leads the all-time series 33-14-4.
