Worcester, Mass. (March 23) -- On a blustery Wednesday afternoon, the Assumption women's lacrosse team dropped a 17-7 final to the University of New Haven in Northeast-10 Conference play at Multi-Sport Stadium. The two teams were tied at 4-4 with three minutes remaining in the opening half before four late goals by the Chargers gave New Haven control by an 8-4 score at the half.
Two UNH goals in the opening three minutes gave the Chargers an early 2-0 lead before Stefanie Pagonis (Leicester, Mass./Worcester Academy) answered with a pair to tie the score at 2-2 after just 5:43 of play. The second goal was on a free position opportunity. Just moments later, the Greyhounds took the lead on another free position shot as Steph O'Rourke (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) scored with 22:43 left for the 3-2 edge. The Chargers pushed ahead by a 4-3 score before O'Rourke tied the game for the final time at 4-4 with 5:04 remaining in the opening half. New Haven took the 8-4 lead into the second half as the Chargers tallied four times in just 1:29 to end the period.
The Greyhounds were outscored by a 9-3 margin in the second half, with goals coming from O'Rourke, Erin Theriault (Feeding Hills, Mass./Agawam) and Michelle Santos (Holliston, Mass./Holliston).
O'Rourke led the Greyhounds with a hat trick, along with two scores from Pagonis. Natalite Lieberman was the top scorer for the Chargers with four goals, while Ashley Ferrandiz had three goals and a game-high five assists. Alexis Gabbe and Sarah Magnone also each had three goals for the Chargers.
Michelle Monahan (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) had seven saves in the loss for the Greyhounds, while Maureen Spellman turned aside seven shots for the victory.
With the loss, the Greyhounds drop to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the Northeast-10, while New Haven is now 3-1 overall and 1-0 in league play. Assumption is back in action on Saturday, March 26th at 1 p.m. as the Greyhounds travel to Southern New Hampshire University.
