Manchester, N.H. (September 7) -- The Assumption volleyball team jumped out to a 2-0 lead at Southern New Hampshire on Tuesday evening before pulling out the 3-2, five-set victory over the Penmen. Lauren Ostafin (Avon, Conn./Avon) added 12 digs, eight kills and five service aces in the victory, with a team leading 13.5 points.
Four Greyhounds had at least eight kills, with Mary Johnston (Pearland, Texas/Glenda Dawson) leading the way with 12.
The Hounds quickly jumped out to a two-set lead, with scores of 25-9 and 25-21, but the Penmen fought back to knot up the score at two. In the fifth and final set, the Hounds took control, outscoring Southern New Hampshire 15-9 for the victory.
Sophomore Ryan Merle (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) was second on the team in kills with 10, while Sam Lupinski (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) added nine.
Junior Steph Whooten (Norton, Mass./Bishop Feehan) led the team with 30 digs while adding two service aces. Setter Kristin Flatekval (Mahwah, N.J./Immaculate Heart) finished second on the team, tied with Ostafin with 12 each. Flatekval also led the team with 36 assists.
Assumption improves to 3-2 overall on the season, while Southern New Hampshire drops to 0-2 on the season. The Hounds hit the court next on Saturday for the Worcester City Tournament, taking on host WPI in a 9 a.m. match for the first match of the day.
