Box Score Manchester, N.H. (October 16) -- The Assumption College volleyball team defeated Southern New University in a five-set match on Tuesday evening at the SNHU Fieldhouse. The set scores were 25-16, 25-22, 25-27, 12-25, and 15-12.
Junior Mary Johnston (Pearland, Texas/Glenda Dawson) finished with 12 kills, the lone Greyhound to finish in double figures. Junior Ryan Merle (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) and sophomore Ann Donahue (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) each had eight kills for Assumption. Johnston finished with a solo block and four assisted blocks for five total blocks, while Merle ended with seven assisted blocks.
The Greyhounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead behind set scores of 25-16 and 25-22, but SNHU took the next two sets to force a fifth set. Assumption took the deciding set, 15-12, securing their fourth league win of the season.
Junior Jess Reimers (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) had a match-high 22 digs, while Kristin Flatekval (Mahwah, N.J/Immaculate Heart) distributed 38 assists.
For SNHU, Emma Houlihan had a match-high 20 kills, while Nina McGouldrick had 11 kills for the Penmen. Catherine Cotton had a match-high 50 assists in the loss.
With a second with over the Penmen this season, Assumption improves to 10-14 on the season and 4-5 in Northeast-10 Conference play, while SNHU falls to 9-9 overall and 1-5 in league play.
The Greyhounds return to action on Saturday, Oct. 20 against Saint Anselm College. The match will begin at 11 a.m. in Manchester, N.H.
