Box Score Easton, Mass. (December 29) -- The No. 13 Assumption College men's basketball team dropped a 76-74 overtime final to Holy Family University at the East Coast Classic at the Merkert Gymnasium
on the campus of Stonehill College on Saturday afternoon.
Ervin Erzil had a steal and a fast break layup with six seconds remaining in overtime for the game-winning basket for the Tigers.
The Greyhounds fall to 8-2 overall and are 6-1 in Northeast-10 Conference play, while Holy Family improves to 6-6 on the season and are 2-2 in CACC play.
Sophomore Terrance Bobb-Jones (Wilmington, Del./Delcastle-Voc. Tech) had a team-high 22 points for Assumption on 8-for-14 shooting. The sophomore guard added 11 rebounds, four assists, and four steals in the loss.The Greyhounds started the game on a 10-0 run to start the game that was started and ended by Bobb-Jones. He started the game with a pair of free throws, and ended the run with a tough layup, giving the Greyhounds a 10-0 lead five minutes into the game.
Holy Family slowly clawed back into the game, tying the game at 22 on a pair of free throws by Alberto Munoz with less than seven minutes to play in the half. Munoz had a game-high 27 points. The Tigers took their first lead of the game with 6:14 remaining in the first half on a pair of free throws by Angel Ayala.
The Greyhounds responded with a 7-0 run of their own to take a 29-24 lead on two baskets by sophomore Jimmy Zenevitch (Methuen, Mass./Central Catholic) and a three-ball by graduate student Kevin Donahue (Pawcatuck, Conn./Stonington). Donahue finished the game with 14 points, giving him 976 points for his career. Tim Beinert (Bellerose Village, N.Y./Holy Cross) had 12 points in the game, giving him 995 points in his career. Finally, senior Ronson Quick (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) had 10 points, bringing him to 982 career points.
Assumption held a four-point lead at the half, 38-34, and extended that lead up to 11 on a layup by Bobb-Jones with 14:31 to play in the second half before the Tigers started to chip away.
Ezell tied the game at 72 with a layup with six seconds remaining to force overtime, the second overtime game in as many meetings between these two teams. Last season, Assumption defeated Holy Family by a 78-74 final in overtime.The Greyhounds held a slight edge in rebounding over Holy Family, 45-41, and assists, 14-10, but the Tigers won the turnover battle, 20-13, giving them a decisive edge in the game.
