Greyhounds Rally to Win Over Philadelphia

Easton, Mass. (December 30) -- The No. 13 ranked Assumption College men's basketball team defeated Philadelphia University by a 62-57 final at the Merkert Gymnasium on day two of the East Region Classic on Sunday afternoon.

Trailing by as many as 11 in the second half, the Greyhounds used a 14-2 run to take their first lead of the game with 8:24 remaining in the game on a spectacular put-back layup by sophomore Terrance Bobb-Jones (Wilmington, Del. / Delcastle Voc-Tech).

Senior's Tim Beinert (Bellerose Village, N.Y. / Holy Cross) and Ronson Quick (Marlton, N.J. / Cherokee) led the way offensively with 19 and 18 points respectively as each player joined the 1,000 point club in the win.

Beinert finished the game with 1,014 points, while Quick finished the game with exactly 1,000 points.

Trailing 12-6, Beinert converted a layup for his 1,000th point to cut the lead to Ram lead to four.

With the game tied at 16, the Rams embarked on a 9-0 lead to open up a 25-16 lead. Assumption would answer with a 6-0 spurt of its own to cut the lead to three, 25-22, capped by a driving layup by Bobb-Jones, but Assumption wouldn't get any closer before halftime as the Rams carried a 33-27 lead into the break.

Coming out of the half, Philadelphia University went on a 7-2 run to extend the lead to 11 points, the biggest lead of the game, on a free throw by Jim Connolly with 17:18 to play in the game.

Assumption fought its way back into the game by outscoring Philadelphia 18-7 over an 8:10 stretch to tie the game at 47. The Greyhounds took their first lead of the game on a Bobb-Jones put-back at the 8:24 mark. The Greyhounds wouldn't trail again the rest of the way

The Greyhounds pushed the gap up to six, 60-54, as Quick converted a three-point play with 23 seconds left on the clock. The play also gave Quick his 1,000th career point.

Andre Gibbs gave the Rams life as he drilled a trey with 19 seconds to go to close the margin to three, 60-57.

Beinert sealed the game with two free throws with 14 seconds to play.

The Greyhounds ended the contest shooting 44.9 percent (22-of-49) from the field and 72.7 percent (16-of-22) from the line. Philadelphia hit 37.5 percent (21-of-56) of their shots, and drained all six of their free throw attempts. Assumption owned a 37-29 rebounding advantage.

The Greyhounds improve to 9-2 overall and 6-1 in Northeast-10 Conference play. Assumption will return to action on Jan. 9 as the Greyhounds will play host to Bentley University. The game will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Laska Gymnasium in Worcester, Mass.
