Box Score Worcester, Mass. (September 18) -- The Assumption College volleyball team defeated Bentley University, 3-1, the fourth victory over Bentley in school history and the first time since Oct. 30, 1982. The Greyhounds beat Bentley twice in 1982 and one in 1981.
Junior Ryan Merle (Skanteateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) had 16 kills in the win, while hitting .519 for Assumption. Sophomore Ann Donahue (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) was also very efficient, hitting .562 on her way to nine kills. As a team, the Greyhounds hit .294 for the match.
The Greyhounds took the first set, 25-19, as Merle had seven kills in the set on nine attempts. Assumption dropped the second set, 27-25, before taking the third set, 25-17. The Greyhounds hit .400 in the set, as three Hounds finished with at least three kills. Assumption finished strong with a 25-16 win in the final set, while hitting .310.
Junior Mary Johnston (Pearland, Texas/Glenda Dawson) finished with 10 kills for the Greyhounds, while Lauren Ostafin (Avon, Conn./Avon) had nine kills. Jess Reimers had 14 digs for Assumption, while setter Kristin Flatekval (Mahwah, N.J./Immaculate Heart) finished with 37 assists.
The Greyhounds improve to 6-8 overall and 1-1 in Northeast-10 Conference play, while Bentley falls to 2-7 overall and 0-2 in league play.
Assumption will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 22 for a tri-match featuring Adelphi University and Daemen College. The first match will begin at noon in the Laska Gymnasium.
