Box Score Worcester, Mass. (September 28) -- The Assumption College volleyball team swept Saint Michael's College by set scores of 25-21, 25-23, and 25-23 at the Laska Gymnasium on Friday night.
Junior Lauren Ostafin (Avon, Conn./Avon) had a game-high 15 kills for Assumption, while hittiing .294 for the game. She added seven digs in the win. Junior Mary Johnston (Pearland, Texas/Glenda Dawson) had 14 kills on .321 hitting, while Ryan Merle (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) had an efficient 10 kills on a .400 hitting percentage.
Libero Steph Whooten (Norton, Mass./Bishop Feehan) had a game-high 13 digs, while Kristin Flatekval (Mahwah, N.J./Immaculate Heart) passed out 39 assists.
The Greyhounds took the first set 25-21, as Ostafin recorded four kills and three digs.
In the second set, the Greyhounds overcame a 19-14 deficit to win 25-23. Johnston had six kills on nine attacks in the set, including the final four for Assumption.
In the final set the Greyhounds stormed back from an 18-13 deficit, as Johnston picked up five kills on 10 attacks in the set. Assumption won the set 25-23. The junior found her groove picking up three kills in a row, leveling the score at 18.
The Greyhounds improve to 8-10 overall and move over .500 at 3-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference. Saint Michael's falls to 7-4 on the season and 0-1 in league play.
Assumption will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 30 at Saint Anselm College. The match will begin at 11:00 a.m. in Manchester, N.H.
