Easton, Mass. (January 15) -- Rallying from a double-digit second-half deficit, No. 23 ranked Assumption College knocked off Stonehill College by a 50-48 final on Tuesday night in Northeast-10 Conference action at Merkert Gym.
Over the opening seven minutes, neither team led by more than five points and with 13:15 left in the first, it was a 14-13 lead for Stonehill following a jumper from Assumption's Ronson Quick (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee). The Skyhawks put together a 13-3 run over the next six and a half minutes and with 6:43 remaining in the half, Stonehill led by an 11-point margin. The Hounds clawed back to single digits a number of times before Stonehill took the 34-23 lead into the halftime break.
Assumption was outscored 15-3 from three-point land in the period as the Hounds were just 1-for-8 from distance.
In the second half, the Hounds got the lead down to single digits on a pullup by Kevin Donahue (Pawcatuck, Conn./Stonington) at 35-27 just 2:23 into the period.
The Hounds continued to chip away in a low-scoring second half and with 7:20 left, Assumption pulled within two at 41-39 following a layup from sophomore Terrance Bobb-Jones (Wilmington, Del./Delcastle Voc-Tech). The margin was never more than four points over the rest of regulation as offense was at a s premium over the final minutes. The Hounds regained the lead for the first time since the opening minute of the game with 2:42 left as Quick dropped in a three from the corner to put Assumption up 48-47.
Jack Cole tied the game with 54 seconds left as he hit the second of two free throws, setting the stage for the Hounds to regain the lead. Bobb-Jones did just that for the visitors as he drove the lane with 21.5 seconds left and scored on a layup to put Assumption up for good at 50-48. Assumption came up big on the defensive end moments later to pull out the dramatic victory.
The Hounds held Stonehill to just two field goals in the second half as the Skyhawks were just 2-for-19 in the period. Stonehill held a 14-5 advantage at the free throw line though, going to the line 22 times to just nine for the Hounds.
Bobb-Jones led the Hounds with 15 points, along with 12 points from Donahue and 10 points from senior Tim Beinert (Bellerose Village, N.Y./Holy Cross).
Cole led Stonehill with 14 points, along with 11 from Brian Hamor.
With the win, the Hounds remain alone atop the Northeast-10 standings at 12-2 overall and 9-1 in league play, while Stonehill falls to 7-7 overall and 3-7 in the Northeast-10.
Assumption is back in action on Saturday, January 19th as the Hounds host Saint Anselm College for a 3:30 p.m. start at Laska Gym.
