Worcester, Mass. (November 16) -- Senior Lauren Ostafin (Avon, Conn. / Avon) notched the third best kill total in school history with 25 as the Greyhounds won a five-set match over Saint Anselm College on Senior Day at Laska Gymnasium. The kills total was also the highest of her career.
Prior to the game, the Greyhounds honored their senior class of seven for their contributions to the program. The senior class consists of Ostafin, Jess Reimers (Okemos, Mich. / Okemos), Ryan Merle (Skaneateles, N.Y. / Skaneateles), Mary Johnston (Pearland, Texas / Glenda Dawson), Athena Garbarino (Nutley, N.J. / Immaculate Heart), Alie Carlson (Amston, Conn. / RHAM), and Kristin Flatekval (Mahwah, N.J. / Immaculate Heart).
Ostafin had a double-double, her second-consecutive, with 25 kills and 12 digs. Flatekval had a career-high 53 assists in the match while adding seven kills and 18 digs. Johnston also had a double-double with 13 kills and 25 digs while Reimers led the Greyhounds defensively with 30 digs in the match. With 13 kills, Johnston finishes her career with 921 kills, putting her in sole possession of second place on the Greyhounds all-time list.
The Greyhounds dropped a hard-fought first set by a 25-21 final. Assumption jumped out to an early lead, holding advantages of 14-9 and 19-14 before the Hawks mounted a late comeback in the set. Ostafin had a team-high six kills in the set while Flatekval had seven digs to lead the Greyhounds defensively.
Assumption responded by jumping out to a 10-point advantage in the second set, extending the lead to 15-5 on a kill by Johnston. The Hawks rallied back, cutting the lead to five, 16-11, forcing the Greyhounds to call their first timeout of the match. The match stayed within five as Assumption held a 21-16 lead before until Saint Anselm rattled off three straight points to trim the Greyhound lead to two. Three consecutive kills by Johnston gave Assumption in a commanding 24-19 lead on the way to a 25-20 final in the second game.
The Greyhounds trailed by four points, 19-15 late in the third set, but rallied to take a 20-19 lead behind the strong service game of Garbarino. The Hawks prevailed in extra points in an extended 29-27 set that went back and forth over the final 10 points.
Garbarino continued her serving excellence in the fourth set, helping Assumption rattle off seven straight points in the fourth set as Assumption built a 10-2 lead in the game. Junior Ann Donahue (Braintree, Mass. / Braintree) provided a spark for the Greyhounds with four crucial kills as the Greyhounds built the lead up to nine, 23-14. The Hawks late surge came up short as Assumption forced a fifth set with a 25-18 victory in game four.
After dropping the first two points of the deciding set, the Greyhounds roared back with five straight points, which included two kills by Ostafin. The Greyhounds wouldn't trail the rest of the way as Johnston punctuated the match with her 13th kill of the day in a 15-9 final.
Garbarino tallied eight service aces in the match, tied for the fifth highest total in a school history, recording more than the entire Hawk team.
The Greyhounds close the season with a 6-17 record overall, including a 3-11 record in Northeast-10 Conference play while the Hawks conclude their season with a 7-20 record, including a 2-12 record in the league.
