Greyhounds Rally Falls Short Against SNHU

Manchester, N.H. (March 23) -- The Assumption College women's lacrosse team dropped its second consecutive game in a 13-11 loss to Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday afternoon.

The Penmen withstood two furious Greyhound rallies to improve to 5-3 overall and 4-0 in league play, while Assumption falls to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in Northeast-10 Conference play.

Sophomore Amy McNeil (Orange, Conn. / Amity) led the Greyhounds scorers with four goals, while Molly Brown (Manchester, N.H. / Manchester Central) and Camille Auger (Kennebunk, Maine / Kennebunk) each had two scores.

Senior Steph O'Rourke (Amherst, N.H. / Souhegan), Michelle Santos (Holliston, Mass. / Holliston), and Kathryn Beall (Shrewsbury, Mass. / Shrewsbury) each added goals in the loss.

The Greyhounds started out slow as SNHU jumped out to a 6-0 lead with 11:53 left in the first half. O'Rourke got the Greyhounds on the board at the 11:49 mark in the first half, before Brown scored twice in the final three minutes of the half to cut the lead to three, 6-3, heading into the break.

Assumption continued its hot streak with three straight goals coming out of halftime, starting with a free position shot by Santos with 29:18 remaining in the game.

McNeil then added back-to-back goals to tie the game with 22:02 to play. The Penmen rebuilt a four-goal lead over the next eight minutes. The Greyhounds lone score over that span came on a free position shot by McNeil with 17:05 to play in the half. At that time the goal cut the lead to two, 9-7.

SNHU added consecutive goals to extend the lead to four, 11-7, before the Greyhounds again furiously rallied. Auger got the scoring started with her first goal of the game before McNeil scored her fourth and final goal to cut the lead to two again, 11-9.

Auger got the Greyhounds within one with 7:28 to play before Beall evened the score at 11 on a free position shot with 4:16 to play in the game.

SNHU responded with two goals over the final four minutes to deny the Greyhounds the comeback victory.

Junior Michelle Monahan (Deer Park, N.Y. / Deer Park) made 13 saves for Assumption while standing strong in net but was the hard-luck loser.

Beall, Brown, and Santos each tied for a team-high with two ground balls, while Santos continued her all-around game with a team-high three draw controls.

The Greyhounds return to action on Sunday, March 24 against Molloy College. The game will begin at 1 p.m. at the Multi-Sport Stadium in Worcester, Mass.
