Old Westbury, N.Y. (January 4) – Freshman Reilly Reid (Mississauga, Ontario/Lorne Park Secondary) knocked down two free throws with 2.6 seconds left to put the Hounds in front by one as the Assumption College men's basketball team rallied for a thrilling 69-68 road win at NYIT on Saturday afternoon on Long Island.
Over the opening 20 minutes, neither team led by more than three points as the lead changed hands 13 times in the half. Assumption held a three-point lead at 19-16 with 9:32 left in half after a layup from Reid before the Bears quickly tied the game on a three from Phil Izevbehai. Tied at 29 late in the period, NYIT took a 31-29 lead into the halftime break as Wayne Bradford knocked down a pair of free throws with 1:24 left. Zenevitch posted 10 points and five rebounds in the half, while sophomore Chris Fitzgerald (Somerset, Mass./Northfield Mt.Hermon) led the Hounds with 11 points.
In the opening five minutes of the second half, NYIT put together a 7-0 run and pushed the lead up to five at 46-41 after a Bradford layup with 14:42 left. Trailing by five again at 50-45, the Hounds used five quick points to tie the game again at 50-50 with 11:25 remaining.
Still tied at the 7:26 mark, the Bears pushed the lead up to their largest margin of the day at 64-58 after a three from the wing by Izevbehai with 4:16 left. NYIT continued to lead by six at 66-60 before five quick points, capped by a Zenevitch hook off the glass, got the Hounds within one as the visitors called a timeout down 66-65. Both teams came up with empty possessions before the Hounds were called for a foul down 68-67 with 11.5 seconds left. Khalif Chaplin went to the line for the Bears, missing the front end of the one-and-one and giving the Hounds a chance with 5.5 seconds remaining as Assumption called a timeout under its own basket. Off the inbounds play, Reid was fouled on a layup attempt with 2.6 left and knocked down both to give the Hounds the 69-68 lead. On the other end, Chaplin got fouled with just 0.2 seconds, but missed both free throws as the Hounds pulled out the 69-68 win.
Junior captain Jimmy Zenevitch (Methuen, Mass./Central Catholic) led the Hounds with a career-high 28-point effort as Reid added 15 and Fitzgerald 13 to pace the visitors. Jahleel Felix led the Bears with 20 points as three NYIT players finished in double figures.
With the win, Assumption improves to 3-9 overall, while NYIT drops to 4-6 on the season.
Assumption is back in action on Wednesday, January 8th as the Hounds travel to the College of Saint Rose for a Northeast-10 Conference game beginning at 7:30 p.m.
