Albany, N.Y. (January 8) -- Despite a game-high 26 points from freshman guard Marcus Murray (Silver Spring, Md./John F. Kennedy), the Assumption College men's basketball team came up short in an 87-72 road loss at the College of Saint Rose on Wednesday night at Nolan Gym.
The Golden Knights took control in the early going of the game and with six minutes left in the first half, Saint Rose had extended the lead out to 12 at 28-16 with 7:08 remaining in the period. Assumption chipped away though and with 4:36 on the clock, a basket from junior Jimmy Zenevitch (Methuen, Mass./Central Catholic) cut the Golden Knight lead to 29-23. The Hounds kept the lead under single digits for the rest of the half and made it a 36-32 game at the break on a three from sophomore Chris Fitzgerald (Somerset, Mass./Northfield Mt. Hermon) with under three seconds left in the period. Murray led the Hounds with 16 points in the half, including a pair of three-pointers.
In the second half, Assumption closed to within just two at 48-46 on a three-point play from sophomore Julian Aiken (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) and a fastbreak layup from senior Emiliano Void (Montreal, Quebec/Lockeport Regional) with 13:16 left. The Hounds got to within one after a Murray three-point play at 52-51 before the Golden Knights extended the lead back to double digits at 66-55 with 6:18 remaining after a three-point play of their own. Saint Rose continued to lead by 10 over the remainder of the game while coming away with the 15-point win.
Murray led two Hounds in double figures with his game 26-point effort, while Saint Rose was paced by senior Dominykas Milka with 25 points. Fitzgerald also finished with 11 points for the Hounds.
With the loss, Assumption drops to 3-10 overall and 1-7 in the Northeast-10, while Saint Rose improves to 8-6 overall and 5-3 in the league.
Assumption is back in action on Saturday, January 11th as the Hounds play host to the University of New Haven for a 3:30 p.m. start at Laska Gym.
