Worcester, Mass. (October 11) -- The Assumption College volleyball team posted its second NE-10 victory of the season on Saturday afternoon at home against Saint Michael's by a score of 3-1. Senior Ann Donahue (Braintree, Mass. / Braintree) posted a career-high 19 kills on the day.
With the win, the Hounds improve to 4-9 overall, 2-4 in the conference, while the Purple Knights fall to 5-7 on the season (0-5 NE-10).
The Hounds dropped the first set by a score of 25-17 before rallying to take sets two through four (25-12, 25-21, 25-14).
Assumption got off to a quick 4-0 lead in set two on a service run by junior Courtney Bagwell (Diamond Bar, Calif. / Diamond Bar). After taking an impressive 8-1 lead, Assumption allowed just two Purple Knight points before launching into a nine-point run, including two kills by Donahue and four more from freshman Stephanie Hawley (Savannah, Ga. / St. Vincent's Academy), to give the Hounds a commanding 14-point lead (17-3). Saint Michael's tried to reduce the deficit but the Hounds ultimately claimed the set by a 13-point margin (25-12).
In the third set, Bagwell started off on fire again, leading the Hounds to a 5-1 lead at the line. After a five-point run by the Purple Knights tied it up at 7-7, the Hounds responded with a 9-2 run to once again claim the lead (15-9). After some back-and-forth play throughout the remainder of the set, the Purple Knights were able to pull to within three (24-21), before Assumption closed the set on another Donahue kill.
Set four kicked off with another Assumption lead, this time a 3-0 start, as part of a 12-2 opening sequence. Donahue led the Hounds to the 25-14 victory with seven kills on 12 attempts (.500), including the match point.
Donahue led both teams with 19 kills on 39 attempts for a .385 kill percentage. Hawley notched her fifth double-double, her second in as many matches, while tallying 13 kills and 16 digs (both second on the team). Senior Alie Carlson (Amston, Conn. / RHAM) also helped lead the offense with 11 kills on the day.
Donahue also helped lead the Hounds with four blocks on the day, joined by freshman Julia Goyette (Randolph, Mass. / Ursuline Academy).
Freshman Kiki Romanik (San Rafael, Calif. / Sir Francis Drake) boasted 45 assists on the match while, defensively, Bagwell and freshman Maria Chrisom (Dover, N.H. / Saint Thomas Aquinas) tied for a team-high 17 digs. Saint Michael's Natalie Moore led both teams with 20 digs.
As a team, Assumption posted 52 kills on 149 attempts for a .168 kill percentage, compared to 28 kills on 139 attempts (.007).
Assumption is set to return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 14, as they travel to American Int'l for a 7 p.m. start.
