Springfield, Mass. (October 14) -- The Assumption College women's volleyball team posted its second-straight win on Tuesday evening on the road at American International, sweeping the Yellow Jackets by a score of 3-0. The Hounds improve to 5-9 on the season, 3-4 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while AIC drops to 5-16 overall, 1-6 in the league.
Assumption claimed the first win of the match by a relatively close score of 25-21 before taking a commanding lead in set two, ultimately earning the victory 25-17 for a 2-0 lead. In the third set, the two squads battled it out but it was the Hounds who emerged victorious with a score of 31-29.
Northeast-10 Conference Molten Rookie of the Week Stephanie Hawley (Savannah, Ga. / St. Vincent's Academy) led the Hounds with her third-straight double-double. She tallied a team-high 10 kills while adding 14 digs, second behind libero Courtney Bagwell (Diamond Bar, Calif. / Diamond Bar) who tallied 21.
In set one, the Yellow Jackets got out to a 3-0 lead to kick off the set before a 5-1 run by the Hounds, including kills by senior Ann Donahue (Braintree, Mass. / Braintree) and graduate student Alie Carlson (Amston, Conn. / RHAM), put Assumption back in the match.
Play remained evenly matched throughout the rest of the set with the score tying eight times, including at 21-21, before Assumption closed on a 4-0 run to take the set.
In the second set, Assumption answered a 1-0 deficit with two points of its own, including a service ace from Bagwell, to take the lead. The Yellow Jackets tied it up at 2-2 before a kill by freshman Julia Goyette (Randolph, Mass. / Ursuline Academy) sparked a four-point run for a lead the Hounds would not relinquish.
The third set was a back-and-forth battle that, at one point, featured a seven-point run for the Yellow Jackets, giving them a 10-6 lead. Assumption fought back, however, with a 10-4 run that pulled the Hounds within one at 23-22. A Donahue kill tied the match 24-24 and neither team was able to gain the two-point edge until Hawley posted a kill to tie the match again at 29-29, followed by a two-point service run for Hawley to close the match.
Hawley led the offense with 10 kills, followed by Donahue and junior Tara Reilly (Northport, N.Y. / Northport) who posted seven each. Carlson also added six for the Hounds. Freshman Kiki Romanik (San Rafael, Calif. / Sir Francis Drake), who was named to the NE-10 Weekly Honor Roll for her impressive performance last week, dished 27 assists on the day while also adding seven digs and one block.
Assumption is scheduled to return to action on Friday, Oct. 17, as they travel to Stonehill for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
