Worcester, Mass. (October 18) -- After five sets of play, the Assumption College volleyball team fell to Franklin Pierce at home on Saturday by a score of 3-2. Graduate student Alie Carlson (Amston, Conn. / RHAM) led the Hound offense with 13 kills on the day.
With the loss, Assumption drops to 5-11 on the season, 3-6 in the NE-10, while the Ravens improve to 12-8 overall, 5-3 NE-10.
The Hounds opened the match with a close 26-24 loss in set one followed by a 25-21 victory to make it 1-1. In the third set, the Ravens rallied for a 25-12 win before the Hounds responded with a 25-23 victory in set four to push the fifth set. Assumption dropped the match on a 15-8 loss in set five.
Assumption kicked off set one on a 4-0 run with junior Courtney Bagwell (Diamond Bar, Calif. / Diamond Bar) at the service line. The Hounds led by as many as five (8-3) and held the advantage before the Ravens closed the gap and overtook the Hounds 23-22 as part of a 6-1 run. Assumption tied it once more at 24-24 on a Raven attack error before dropping the last two points.
In set two, Assumption got out to a 3-1 lead before a 5-1 run by FPU earned the Ravens the lead (6-4). The Hounds tied it up 6-6 before regaining the lead that it would not relinquish for the remainder of the set. Reigning NE-10 Rookie of the Week Stephanie Hawley (Savannah, Ga. / St. Vincent's Academy) clinched the win for the Hounds, notching the final kill of the set.
With the score tied 1-1, the Ravens regained the lead after set three posting a 25-12 victory, highlighted by a four-point run by FPU to begin the match, as well as an eight point run near the end.
The Hounds rebounded, claiming the fourth set 25-23. Assumption kicked off the set with a 4-0 lead but allowed the Ravens to tie it up 4-4. Assumption went on a 5-0 run to reclaim the lead with Hawley at the line 16-13 before closing on a ball handling error by Franklin Pierce.
In the fifth set, the two squads battled for the first eight points, repeatedly tying the score, before the Ravens closed on an eight-point run to clinch the win.
Carlson led Assumption's offense with 13 kills, followed closely by senior Ann Donahue (Braintree, Mass. / Braintree), who posted 11, and Hawley, who notched 10. Hawley also tallied 15 digs, second on the team, for her seventh double-double of the season.
Defensively, Bagwell led the Hounds with 20 digs while freshman Kiki Romanik (San Rafael, Calif. / Sir Francis Drake) tallied a match-high 45 assists.
Assumption returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 21, as they host Bentley at 7 p.m.
