Worcester, Mass. (October 21) -- The Assumption College volleyball team claimed the first set (25-20) before dropping the next three (25-14, 25-19, 25-15) to Bentley on Tuesday evening in Laska Gymnasium. Freshman Stephanie Hawley (Savannah, Ga. / St. Vincent's Academy) led the Hound offense with 10 kills and two service aces on the night.
With the loss, Assumption falls to 5-12 overall (3-7 NE-10) while the Falcons improve to 13-7 (8-2 NE-10).
The Greyhounds kicked off the match with a 10-2 lead in set one including a five-point run that included two kills from senior Bizzie Gonring (Whitefish Bay, Wis. / Dominican), another from Hawley and a service ace from freshman Maria Chrisom (Dover, N.H. / Saint Thomas Aquinas). The Hounds continued the momentum, building a 19-10 lead before the Falcons went on a five-point run of their own to bring them within five.
A kill from senior Ann Donahue (Braintree, Mass. / Braintree) temporarily stopped the run, but the Falcons registered a three more points to cut the deficit to three (21-18). Assumption closed the set on a 4-1 run solidified by a kill from graduate student Alie Carlson (Amston, Conn. / RHAM) for the set point.
The Falcons took a 3-0 lead in set one before Assumption responded with four-straight points on a Courtney Bagwell (Diamond Bar, Calif. / Diamond Bar) service run, including two blocks (Donahue and Gonring/Carlson and Donahue) to take the lead 4-3. The Falcons followed with 11 points to just five for Assumption to take a commanding 17-10 lead before a 6-0 run for Bentley put the Falcons too far ahead for a Hound comeback, despite a subsequent 4-0 Hound run to make it 23-14.
It was the Greyhounds to pull ahead to kick off set three with a 3-0 run including two service aces by Hawley. Assumption led by as much as three (6-3) before the Falcons caught up and took the lead on a 5-0 run. Bentley would not relinquish the lead and the Hounds went down 2-1 in the match.
The two squads put up an evenly-matched battle in the fourth until halfway through the set when the Falcons took control to take the set and the match.
The Hounds totaled 41 kills on 133 attempts for a .150 kill percentage compared to 53 kills on 134 attacks (.261 percent) by Bentley. Freshman Kiki Romanik (San Rafael, Calif. / Sir Francis Drake) notched 34 assists and went 4-for-8 at the net for a .500 kill percentage. Defensively, Assumption was led by Bagwell who posted a match-high 19 digs (tied with Bentley's Lauren Colasanti).
Carlson also posted a match-high three blocks.
The Hounds return to action on Saturday, Oct. 25, at home for their Dig Pink match at 12 p.m.
