Worcester, Mass. (October 25) -- The Assumption College volleyball team earned a 3-1 victory over the visiting American Int'l Yellow Jackets in a non-conference match on Saturday. The Hounds were led by senior Ann Donahue (Braintree, Mass. / Braintree) who posted 13 kills and added seven blocks on the afternoon to bring her closer to Assumption's season and career kill percentage records.
With the win, the Hounds improve to 6-12 on the season (3-7 NE-10), while the Yellow Jackets drop to 6-20 overall and remain 2-9 in the conference.
The scores for the day's sets were as follows: 25-15, 28-26, 21-25, 25-21.
The Hounds got off to a great start in set one, taking the first point on a kill from junior Tara Reilly (Northport, N.Y. / Northport) to set the tone for the match. Assumption got out to a 7-2 lead before the Yellow Jackets tied it up on a 5-0 run. The Hounds rebounded quickly, however to regain the lead and close the match 25-15.
Set two was a tough, back-and-fourth battle as the Yellow Jackets tried to rebound from their 10-point, first-set loss. Assumption claimed the first point on a service ace from freshman Stephanie Hawley (Savannah, Ga. / St. Vincent's Academy) before the squads tied at 5-5. Assumption went on a three-point run to take the lead before AIC responded with a 5-1 run to take over 14-12. A Donahue kill sparked a 4-0 run to reclaim the advantage for Assumption (17-15).
The Hounds ultimately pulled out the 28-26 win to get out to a two-set lead on the Yellow Jackets.
It was AIC to get out in front in set three. Assumption came back to make it 5-4 in favor of the Hounds, followed immediately by a 5-0 run for AIC to take a 9-5 lead. The Greyhounds trailed the rest of the set and went down 2-1 in the match.
The Hounds got out to an impressive 10-4 lead in set four before AIC made a comeback run. The two teams battled with the Yellow Jackets coming as close as three points (22-19) before Assumption closed it out on a 3-1 run, including the final kill from graduate student Alie Carlson (Amston, Conn. / RHAM).
Assumption was led offensively by Donahue's 13 kills and a match-high seven blocks. Donahue registered just one error for a .414 hitting percentage and now posts a .313 hitting percentage on the season. With that mark, the senior looks to complete her final season as a Hound in second place in the Assumption record book. Following Saturday's match, Donahue also posts a .272 career hitting percentage, just shy of the current Assumption career hitting percentage record (.275).
Hawley followed offensively, tallying 12 kills for the Hounds and also contributed heavily to the defense, notching 14 digs. Hawley recorded her eighth career double-double on the match.
Senior Bizzie Gonring (Whitefish Bay, Wis. / Dominican) finished second on the squad with four blocks while also adding five kills. Freshman setter Kiki Romanik (San Rafael, Calif. / Sir Francis Drake) finished out the afternoon with three blocks, 15 digs and 33 assists.
Defensively, freshman Maria Chrisom (Dover, N.H. / Saint Thomas Aquinas) and junior Courtney Bagwell (Diamond Bar, Calif. / Diamond Bar) led Assumption with 16 kills apiece
As a team, the Hounds notched 41 kills on 141 attacks for a .163 kill percentage, compared to 46-of-154 (.143) for AIC.
Assumption is set to return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 28, when they travel to Southern New Hampshire University for a 7 p.m. NE-10 match-up.
