Manchester, N.H. (November 8) -- The Assumption College volleyball team closed its season on Friday night with a 3-1 victory over the Saint Anselm Hawks. The win marks the Hounds' second-straight to finish the 2014 season rendering the squad with a final overall record of 8-14 (5-9 NE-10). Senior Ann Donahue (Braintree, Mass. / Braintree) led the Assumption offense on the evening with a match-high 13 kills.
With the loss, the Hawks drop to 13-12 on the season, 5-8 in the conference.
The Hounds dropped the first set 25-17 before claiming the next three 25-22, 25-21 and 25-20 for the win.
In the first set, the Greyhounds suffered an early 4-0 deficit that they could not rebound from, however, Assumption prevailed in the second set, coming back from a 2-0 deficit. The Hounds tied the match on a Donahue kill to make it 3-3, and again on a kill from freshman Julia Goyette (Randolph, Mass. / Ursuline Academy) to make it 6-6. A Hawk service error allowed Assumption to tie the score and take a lead it would not relinquish for the remainder of the match.
The Hawks attempted a come-back run in the second set, getting as close as two (24-22), before a Saint Anselm attacking error and another Donahue kill clinched the set, tying the match 1-1.
The third and fourth sets also proved to be back-and fourth contests, ultimately yielding Hound victories.
As a team, the Hounds hit .187 compared to .128 for the host team. Assumption tallied 45 kills compared to 54 for the Hawks.
Donahue led the offense with 13 kills, followed closely by freshman Stephanie Hawley (Savannah, Ga. / St. Vincent's Academy) who posted 10, along with 11 digs for her 10th double-double of the season.
Leading both squads on the defensive side of the ball was junior Courtney Bagwell (Diamond Bar, Calif. / Diamond Bar) who notched 23 digs on the day.
