Box Score
Easton, Mass. (November 8) -- A diving 32-yard touchdown catch by senior Eddy Frazier (Worcester, Mass./Burncoat) with 5:16 left put the Assumption College football team ahead for good in a 28-21 road win at Stonehill on Saturday afternoon at W.B. Mason Stadium.
With the win, Assumption finishes as the No. 3 seed in the Northeast-10 Conference standings and will host the University of New Haven next weekend. The Hounds victory snapped a seven-game Stonehill winning streak in the all-time series.
Stonehill got on the board on its first possession of the game as freshman quarterback Matt Foltz scored from nine yards out with 11:41 remaining in the opening quarter for the 7-0 lead. Foltz faked the handoff to the running back before keeping the ball himself for the score. Assumption answered with a big defensive play to spark the Hounds as senior Zach Triner (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) picked up a bad snap by the Skyhawks to give the Hounds possession deep in Stonehill territory. After a run up the middle by senior Matt Heriveaux (Everett, Mass./Malden Catholic) made it first and goal, an eventual touchdown by senior Kevin Ihlefeld (Norfolk, Mass./Xaverian) with 2:03 left in the first quarter from one yard out tied the game up at 7-7. The touchdown was the third of the season for Ihlefeld as he now has three rushes for four yards and three scores.
Stonehill had a chance to go up 10-7 with 13:34 left in the second quarter, but the Hounds got a finger on the field goal attempt by Steve Grzywacz to keep the game locked in a tie. In the first half, the Hounds picked up a pair of interceptions and the fumble recovery by Triner to keep them in the game at 7-7.
It was the Skyhawks who tried something in the third quarter as after a fake punt chance turned into a first down, a long pass to Nate Robitaille put Stonehill in the red zone. Foltz went up the middle for Stonehill for the score, followed by an extra-point chance that was wide left for the 13-7 lead in the third.
On the next play, senior De'Ontray Johnson (San Diego, Calif./Hoover) ran back his second kickoff of the year for a touchdown as he broke thru the first level of Stonehill defenders and bolted 91 yards for the 14-13 lead with 8:32 on the clock.
Assumption took that lead to the fourth quarter thanks to a field goal block late in the third as freshman Tyis Boykin (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian) blocked the Stonehill chance with 1:33 on the clock. On the ensuing drive, Heriveaux went in untouched to the right for the one-yard scored and a 21-13 advantage. Stonehill answered though on a six-yard TD rush up the middle by Foltz with 6:34 remaining, along with a two-point conversion just inside the left pylon by Robitaille that tied the game up at 21-21.
The Hounds went in front for good with 5:16 remaining in the final period as Frazier cut up the far sideline, pulled in the pass near the five yard line and dove for the end zone for the 32-yard TD reception and the 28-21 final. Stonehill came right back in to Assumption territory to try to send the game into overtime, but sophomore Jarrod Casey (Milford, Mass./Bridgton Academy) picked up his second interception of the day to seal the victory with 1:31 remaining for the win.
With the victory, Assumption is now 9-0 in Northeast-10 regular-season play on the road under second-year head coach Bob Chesney.
Heriveaux led the offense with 62 yards on the ground, along with four catches for 52 yards by freshman Ashton Grant (Manchester, Conn./Manchester). On defense, senior Derrick Mann (Sharon, Mass./Sharon) led the team with nine total tackles to go along with a half sack and one and a half tackles for loss as he continues to lead the league in both categories.
For Stonehill, who held a 407-196 edge in total offense and 310-88 advantage in passing yards, Foltz completed 20-of-34 passes for 310 yards and three interceptions. Robitaille lead the receivers, pulling down nine catches for a game-high 168 yards.
With the win, Assumption completes the regular season at 6-4 overall and 6-3 in Northeast-10 play, while Stonehill drops to 4-6 overall and 4-5 in the league.
Assumption is back in action on Saturday, November 15th as the Hounds host No. 4 seeded University of New Haven for a 5 p.m. start at the Multi-Sport Stadium. Assumption defeated the Chargers by a 24-20 final in week three of the season in West Haven.
