Box Score 2 Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. (September 14) -- The Assumption College women's volleyball team (1-4) topped Mercy in five sets on Saturday as part of a tri-match split. Assumption opened the tri-match with a three-set loss to Chestnut Hill (4-6) before getting out to a two-set lead on Mercy (2-4).
In the first match, the Hounds dropped three straight sets 25-13, 25-18 and 25-20 to Chestnut Hill. In the second match, Assumption took the first two sets over Mercy 25-21, 25-21 before falling in the next two 25-19 and 25-15.
It was in the final set that the Hounds pulled ahead for good, claiming a 15-13 victory for the overall win.
In the first match against Chestnut Hill, freshman Stephanie Hawley (Savannah, Ga. / St. Vincent's Academy) posted her first career double-double notching 11 kills and 17 digs to lead the Hounds in both categories. She also posted three assists and added one block assist to her impressive stats.
Graduate student Alie Carlson (Amston, Conn. / RHAM) also performed well on the offensive side of the net, posting seven kills toward Assumption's total.
In the second match of the day against Mercy, the Hounds worked hard for their first win of the season, taking the team to five sets. Hawley again stepped up for Assumption with another double-double. This time, the freshman went an impressive 22-for-43 at the net for a .442 kill percentage while adding 11 digs.
Senior Ann Donahue (Braintree, Mass. / Braintree) tallied 13 kills in the match to add to Assumption's 56 kill total over five sets.
The Hounds concluded their first win of the season with 56 kills, 54 assists, 55 digs, five service aces and six block assists. Forty-six of the Hounds' 54 assists came off the hands of freshman setter Kiki Romanik (San Rafael, Calif. / Sir Francis Drake).
The Hounds will travel to Rockville Centre N.Y. to play in a tri-match hosted by Molloy this weekend. Assumption will face Molloy on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 11 a.m., followed by Philadelphia at 1 p.m.
