Worcester, Mass. (September 25) -- On Thursday night at Laska Gym, the Assumption College volleyball team dropped a 3-1 final to the University of New Haven in Northeast-10 Conference action. The loss snaps Assumption two-match winning streak as the Hounds fell by scores of 5-25, 25-23, 18-25 and 20-25.

In the opening set, the Chargers opened with a 6-0 run that forced an Assumption timeout and eventually held a 14-2 advantage, en route to the 25-5 UNH victory in set one.  

In set two, Assumption jumped out to a quick 6-2 edge, capped by a service ace from freshman Maria Chrisom (Dover, N.H./Saint Thomas Aquinas). The Hounds continued to lead at 17-12 before a furious New Haven rally eventually gave the Chargers the lead at 18-17. With the teams tied late after a New Haven player got into the net, the Hounds closed out the set strong to win by a 25-23 final. On set point, senior Bizzie Gonring (Whitefish Bay, Wisc./Dominican) picked up the kill off an assist from freshman Kiki Romanik (San Rafael, Calif./Sir Francis Drake).

In the third, the two teams were even just over midway thru following a kill from senior Alie Carlson (Amston, Conn./RHAM). A quick 4-0 scoring run put the Chargers in front at 18-14, en route to the 25-18 final margin as New Haven ended on an 11-4 outburst to take the 2-1 lead in the match.

Set four started with the Hounds jumping ahead 13-9 following a New Haven service error before the Chargers erupted for a 9-0 run to seize control of the set at 18-9. Assumption cut the lead to 20-15 later in the set and out of a timeout, the Hounds cut the margin to 21-20 and forced a New Haven timeout. Pulling the Hounds within one was a service ace by senior Ann Donahue (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) that clipped the end line and landed between two Chargers. New Haven closed on a 4-0 run though to take the fourth set 25-20 and the match by the 3-1 final.

Donahue finished the match with a team-high 10 kills for the Hounds, who also received a match-best 18 digs from junior Courtney Bagwell (Diamond Bar, Calif./Diamond Bar) and a 30-assist, 15-dig effort by Romanik.

For New Haven, Margo Meteyer had 13 kills and 12 digs, along with 11 kills each by Kristen Lee and Kristy Atufunwa. Kaulana Ane led the Chargers with 37 assists while also picking up 14 digs.

With the loss, the Hounds drop to 3-6 overall and 1-1 in Northeast-10 play, while the Chargers improve to 7-4 overall and 2-0 in the league.

Assumption is back in action on Tuesday, September 30th as the Hounds host Adelphi University for a 7 p.m. start in Laska Gym in the final match of a three-match homestand.
