Box Score 2 Manchester, N.H. (September 6) -- The Assumption College women's volleyball team (0-2) opened the season with two losses in a tri-match hosted by Saint Anselm Saturday. The Hounds dropped their first game 3-0 to Saint Anselm (1-0) before falling 3-0 to Post (1-0) later in the afternoon.
Match 1 - Assumption 0 vs. Saint Anselm 3
The Hounds were led by senior Ann Donahue (Braintree, Mass. / Braintree) in their first game of the season, who posted seven kills on the day.
The Hawks won 25-17, 25-19 and 25-13 to sweep the match. Donahue completed the match with seven kills on 16 attacks for a .250 kill percentage.
Junior Tara Reilly (Northport, N.Y. / Northport) was also a leading contributor on offense, posting five kills on 12 attacks. Graduate student Alie Carlson (Amston, Conn. / RHAM) and freshman Stephanie Hawley (Savannah, Ga. / St. Vincent's Academy) each added four more to the Hounds' total.
On defense, libero Courtney Bagwell (Diamond Bar, Calif. / Diamond Bar) racked up 13 digs to lead Assumption. She was followed by Hawley who posted nine while freshman Kiki Romanik (San Rafael, Calif. / Sir Francis Drake) tallied 21 assists.
The Hounds accumulated 22 kills on 85 attacks for a .141 kill percentage compared to 39 kills on 99 attacks (.172 kill percentage). Assumption also tallied 30 digs compared to 45 for the Hawks.
Match 2 - Assumption 0 vs. Post 3
The Eagles swept Assumption 25-20, 25-13 and 25-23 for the victory in Saturday's match-up.
The Hounds started the second match strong with senior captain Bizzie Gonring (Whitefish Bay, Wis. / Dominican) striking first to open the set. Assumption led by as many as six points in the first set (12-6) before Post rallied to tie it at 13-13. The two squads battled it out for the remainder of the set but Post ultimately earned the 1-0 advantage with a final score of 25-20 in set one.
The second set moved more swiftly as the Eagles downed the Hounds 25-13 before an evenly matched third set resulted in a 25-23 loss for the Hounds.
It was Hawley who led Assumption against Post. The freshman tallied nine kills over the match and was followed by Carlson who posted seven. Donahue was consistent at the net, adding four more kills for the Hounds on just seven attacks for a .571 kill percentage.
Defensively, Bagwell led the squad again with 13 digs, followed closely by freshman Maria Chrisom (Dover, N.H. / Saint Thomas Aquinas) who posted 11. Bagwell also registered a team-high three service aces against Post while Romanik tallied 23 assists.
The Hounds had 26 kills and 43 digs, compared to 44 kills and 47 digs for the Eagles. Post registered 44 kills on 110 attacks for a .245 kill percentage while Assumption posted a .108 kill percentage.
The Hounds are set to return to action when they host Dominican in their home opener this Tuesday, Sept. 9, at Laska Gymnasium in Worcester, Mass. at 7 pm.
