West Haven, Conn. (January 10) -- On Saturday afternoon at Charger Gym, the Assumption College men's basketball team dropped a 68-62 final to the University of New Haven in Northeast-10 Conference play.
In the opening half, the Chargers jumped out to an early 12-6 advantage over the first four minutes as sophomore Kamali Bey (Springfield, Mass./Wilbraham &Monson Academy) scored two of his 10 points. New Haven extended the lead into double figures with 14:31 left and out to a 29-14 margin with 7:59 remaining before the Hounds closed the half on a 16-6 run.
Still trailing by 15 at 33-18 with 6:34 remaining, Assumption's Terrance Bobb-Jones (Wilmington, Del./Delcastle-Voc Tech) got things started with a three-point play to cut the lead to 33-21. Sophomore Marcus Murray (Washington, D.C./John F. Kennedy) dropped in a three with 4:07 on the clock to shrink the lead down to 33-26 before Assumption eventually closed to 35-33 at the break.
Bobb-Jones led Assumption with 11 points and six rebounds in the first half as the team shot a solid 53.8 percent from the field. For New Haven, Jemal Mosley led all scorers in the period with 14 first-half points as the team connected on 50 percent of their shots from the field, including six three-pointers.
In the second half, the Hounds held the Chargers scoreless for a streak of 6:04 and eventually took the 40-39 lead with 13:18 remaining on a jumper by junior Karl Ziegler (Annandale, Va./Annandale). The teams were separated by no more than four points over the next seven minutes, including a tie at 50-50 with 6:15 left after a Ziegler three-point play. New Haven regained control of the game at 60-54 with 3:33 on the clock following a layup by Jonny Ocasio, but the Hounds continued to battle and made it a 62-60 score after a Bobb-Jones layup with just under a minute left. Anderson knocked down four free throws in the final seconds though to clinch the victory for New haven as he finished the contest with a 21-point, 10-rebound double-double.
Bobb-Jones finished the game with a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double to go along with five assists and four steals as three Hounds finished in double figures. Ziegler ended the game with 13 points, along with a 10-point effort from Bey.
For New Haven, Anderson led four Chargers in double figures with his double-double, along with 17 points from Mosley and 10 points each by Ocasio and Samir McDaniels.
With the loss, Assumption falls to 6-8 overall and 3-6 in Northeast-10 play, while New Haven now sits at 9-5 overall and 3-4 in the league.
Assumption is back in action on Tuesday, January 13th as the Hounds travel to Le Moyne for a 4 p.m. start at Ted Grant Court in Syracuse, N.Y.
