Worcester, Mass. (January 17) -- Led by five players who finished in double figures, the Assumption College men's basketball team won its fourth straight home game with an 82-64 victory over Adelphi University on Saturday afternoon at Laska Gym.
Adelphi held an early edge on a game-opening three by Duane Morgan before the Hounds eventually took control. A turnaround jumper from junior Karl Ziegler (Annandale, Va./Annandale) with 17:14 remaining put the Hounds ahead at 8-6 and the lead swelled to 19-10 on a layup from senior Jimmy Zenevitch (Methuen, Mass./Central Catholic) at the 10:42 mark.
An 11-2 run proved to be decisive in the opening period as the Hounds turned a 27-20 lead into a 16-point game with 1:26 left on a pair of free throws by sophomore Kamali Bey (Springfield, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson Academy). Assumption eventually took a 38-24 lead into the break as the Hounds shot 48.4 percent from the field in the half and outrebounded Adelphi by a 21-13 margin. Bey and Zenevitch had eight points each in the first period, while Justin Jenkins paced Adelphi with seven points off the bench.
In the second, the lead swelled to as many as 23 at 57-34 midway thru the half on a jumper from Ziegler. Ziegler went on to finish with 18 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the field. After the Panthers cut the lead to 16, sophomore Reilly Reid (Mississauga, Ontario/Lorne Park) knocked down a turnaround baseline jumper with 4:01 left to extend the advantage back to 20 at 69-49.
Junior Terrance Bobb-Jones (Wilmington, Del./Delcastle Voc Tech) took a pass from junior Julian Aiken (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) and converted the alley-oop dunk with just 2:11 remaining as he picked up two of his 12 points for the game. Bobb-Jones also added a game-high 13 rebounds as he posted the double-double to go along with two assists and two steals.
Bey led the Hounds with 19 points on 7-for-10 shooting, while Zenevitch finished with an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double. The Hounds shot 54.4 percent from the field in the game and converted 16-of-21 attempts at the free throw line.
For Adelphi, Morgan led four Panthers in double figures with a 15-point effort. Anthony Libroia added 14 points, along with 11 from Damon Coleman and a 10-point, seven-rebound game from Ryan DeNicola. As a team, the Panthers were outrebounded 38-17 while shooting 45.1 percent from the field and 88.2 percent from the line.
With the win, Assumption improves to 7-9 overall and 4-7 in Northeast-10 play, while Adelphi falls to 4-12 overall and 1-9 in the league as the Panthers have now lost seven straight.
Assumption is idle until Saturday, January 24th when the Hounds will travel to American International for a 3:30 p.m. start at Butova Gym in Springfield, Mass.
