-The Lead: The Assumption College volleyball team fell to Pace University on the road on Tuesday evening by a final score of 3-0 after coming in just four points shy of a first-set win, 25-21. Assumption returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 7, at Franklin Pierce.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
-Senior Tara Reilly (Northport, N.Y. / Northport) led the Hound offense on the day, tallying nine kills in just 15 attacks for an impressive .533 kill percentage.
-Smith was followed by sophomore Stephanie Hawley (Savannah, Ga. / St. Vincent's Academy), who posted eight kills, and her classmate Olivia Burke (Salem, N.H. / Salem) who notched seven.
-Burke also posted three block assists and one solo block.
-Defensively, sophomore setter Kiki Romanik (San Rafael, Calif. / Sir Francis Drake) led Assumption with 11 digs. Following just behind was freshman Kellie Smith (Richland, Mich. / Gull Lake) with 10.
-Romanik also posted 27 assists on the night while Reilly collected two service aces.
-Overall, Pace accumulated 41 kills compared to 36 for the Hounds for a .286 kill percentage. Assumption's kill percentage was .134.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
-In the first set, the two squads remained fairly even until Pace began to pull away, tying the score at 3-3 before quickly increasing its lead to 10-4. The Hounds rallied for a comeback on a Reilly service run from a 20-13 deficit to just a 20-17 disadvantage. The run included kills from Reilly and Burke, along with a Reilly service ace.
-A Hawley kill made it 23-21 in favor of the home team before two straight Greyhound attack errors clinched the first set for the Setters, 25-21.
-Assumption took the first two points in the second set for the lead, until Pace tied it at 7-7 and 9-9 before pulling away for a 13-4 run en route to the eventual 25-15 final.
-The Hounds battled in the third after an early 2-0 deficit, coming back to take the lead 5-4 on kills from Hawley (1) and Burke (2). Pace quickly regained the lead, however, and clinched the match with a final score of 25-19.
UP NEXT:
-Assumption is set to travel to Franklin Pierce on Saturday, Nov. 7, for a 1 p.m. contest before finishing up its 2015 road schedule on Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 5 p.m. The Hounds return home for their final match of the season on Saturday, Nov. 14, as they host Merrimack for Senior Day at 12 p.m.
