Easton, Mass. (February 11) -- In Northeast-10 Conference play, the Assumption College men's basketball team fell to Stonehill College by an 86-71 margin at Merkert Gym on Wednesday night.
In the first half, the Hounds took a 15-10 lead early and held a 17-13 advantage with 9:29 on the clock after a runner from junior Karl Ziegler (Annandale, Va./Annandale). The Skyhawks countered though with an 11-2 run over the next two minutes, capped by a free throw from Jack Cole, for a 24-19 Skyhawk lead. Stonehill pushed the lead out to double digits for the first time at 34-24 with 3:17 left after a three-point play by Pierce Cumpstone and eventually took a 39-32 edge into the halftime break after an Adam Bramanti hoop at the buzzer.
Stonehill continued to lead by at least seven in the early moments of the second period, including at 45-38 with 16:39 left after a free throw line jumper from Ziegler. Assumption cut the lead to just six moments on a free throw and continued to stay within single digits with 10:29 remaining on a hoop by junior Terrance Bobb-Jones (Wilmington, Del./Delcastle-Voc Tech) for the 60-51 margin. A Stonehill three made it a 12-point margin midway thru the period as the Skyhawks pushed to a 20-point lead and the eventual 15-point final.
Bobb-Jones led the Hounds with 20 points, along with 17 points from senior Jimmy Zenevitch (Methuen, Mass./Central Catholic), 11 from Ziegler and 10 by sophomore Marcus Murray (Washington, D.C./John F. Kennedy). For the Skyhawks, Ryan Logan led five players in double figures with a 23-point effort.
Assumption falls to 8-14 overall and 5-12 in Northeast-10 play with the loss, while Stonehill improves to 16-7 overall and 11-6 in the league.
Assumption is back in action on Saturday, February 14th as the Hounds travel to Merrimack College for a 3 p.m. start in North Andover.
