Worcester, Mass. (March 16) -- Junior Julianna Molloy (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) scored with 2:37 left in the second overtime to lift the Assumption College women's lacrosse team to a thrilling 14-13 double-overtime victory over Saint Michael's College on Monday afternoon. The win is the fifth in a row for the Hounds in the all-time series and marks the second straight overtime home victory for Assumption.
The Purple Knights came out firing with a three-goal outburst over the first 1:38 of the game, including an unassisted tally from Melissa Jaskiewicz just 16 seconds into the game. Saint Michael's struck again 19 seconds later on the second goal of the season for Kim Liberty, followed by another Liberty goal with 28:22 left in the first half. Senior Camille Auger (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) got the Hounds on the board on her 13th goal of the year, assisted on by freshman Caitlin Graves (Ashland, Mass./Ashland) at the 26:02 mark. Graves found the net with a goal of her own moments later, assisted on by senior Amy McNeil (Orange, Conn./Amity) as the senior became the all-time leading scorer in Assumption women's lacrosse history with the 222nd point of her career.
The teams traded goals over the next 10 minutes before Saint Michael's seized the 6-3 lead with 12:23 left in the half on the first goal of the season by sophomore Paige MacKinnon. The Hounds cut the lead down to just one twice over the remainder of the period, including at 7-6 on a goal from Auger with 2:53 remaining as she took the ball right up the middle for her second goal of the first half.
Assumption held a slim 11-10 edge in shots on goal in the first half, along with a perfect 8-for-8 performance in clear attempts in the opening 30 minutes.
McNeil tied the game for the first time for Assumption with 6:06 elapsed in the second as she took the ball off a restart and fired her 15th goal of the season inside the right post to knot things at 7-7. Auger completed the hat trick 5:18 later as she took a pass from McNeil and put the Hounds in front for the first time by an 8-7 margin.
The teams traded the lead back and forth for the next seven minutes before back-to-back goals from senior Courtney Piper extended the Saint Michael's lead back out to two at 11-9 with just over six minutes left. The first goal from Piper was a man-up score, followed by a free-position goal for the two-goal advantage.
McNeil cut the deficit in half with 5:44 left in regulation as she took sophomore goalie Grace Gunning on one-on-one and scored her 16 goal of the season for the 11-10 margin. Junior Molly Brown (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central) tied the game yet again on a free-position goal with just 1:27 on the clock to send the game into overtime.
In the first overtime, McNeil started the scoring with a free-position goal as the teams traded goals to finish up the first extra period tied up at 13-13. In the second overtime, the teams played a scoreless opening three minutes and switched ends before the Hounds came away with the game-winning score. Molloy made the final Hounds scoring opportunity count as she came around the net and fired in her second goal of the game and fourth of the season to lift Assumption to the win.
Saint Michael's held a slim 36-31 advantage in shots, along with a 20-12 edge in draw controls. Assumption posted the 21-20 advantage in ground balls, forced 18 Saint Michael's turnovers and successfully converted on 14-of-17 clear attempts for the game.
Auger led the offense with a four-goal effort as she now has 97 goals for her career, while McNeil finished with three goals and three assists. Brown added a hat trick of her own, along with two goals from Molloy and one goal and one assist by Graves.
For the Purple Knights, Piper was one of six goal scorers as she finished with a four-goal afternoon. Boyer added two goals and one assist as five players finished with multiple goals for the visitors.
Sophomore goalie Jaclyn Chirco (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) posted 10 saves while earning her fifth win of the year, while Gunning had 12 stops in the loss.
Assumption sits at 5-1 overall and 1-1 in Northeast-10 play with the win, while Saint Michael's drops to 0-2 overall and in the league with the loss.
